AIBU?

To think this cashier was rude!

NC for this.

Doing my shopping in Tesco this afternoon with my 6mo. Had to buy a pregnancy test which I had hidden in the bottom of the trolley in case I saw anyone I knew.

Anyway putting the shopping on the belt when the cashier starts asking about the baby. How I'm getting on, how she's sleeping etc. All fine. Then she scans the pregnancy tests and starts making comments about having two babies close together. Kinda drawing attention to it which I wanted to avoid.

Then at the end she asked if my 6mo was planned! Which she wasn't but I'm in late 20s and self sufficient.

AIBU to think that cashiers should show some discretion when people are buying things like this? And not asking very personal questions?

Being very British I obviously didn't say anything!

Congrats OP< it must have been a hard few days of uncertainty, glad it's all working out and you got the result you wanted. Enjoy your existing baby without stress

I've just ordered some from eBay so that solves the embarrassment factor!

Ordered 5 so hopefully I'll get a result one way or the other this time Smile

I am generally too sarky and have a forked tongue, hence, I am seldom asked inane and inappropriate questions. I would have called the store manager and complained though.

Slightly different but we were buying wine and beers to last a few months - cashier says , Oh my that’s a lot of alcohol!
My dh gave her a death stare and said “mind your own business “
I was mortified and walked away Grin

Not at all will be faking. Generally the training is be polite, pleasant not make small talk

Every day is a school day! I didn't know that chatty store assistants were only doing it because they have to, as part of their job. I thought they were being genuine or were just outgoing. I can do without it, in fact it's the main reason I use self serve but when it does happen, I'm always polite back.
So I'm going along with a conversation I can't really be bothered with, with a shop assistant pretending to be interested....what a stupid policy.

When I worked for a large supermarket chain we were trained on these things as well as told to use our common sense. Things like sanitary towels, condoms and pregnancy tests you do not ask questions about. You have to chat to them or you fail any mystery customers but dear god do not embarrass any of them. I had some tough customers but I couldn’t imagine buying a pregnancy test and having someone ask me about it.
I did have a young guy at the store I worked in try and make conversation about my sanitary towels once... that was awkward.

OP have you got a Home Bargains near you? They do 3 tests for 79p. They’re the thin dip strips and I find they work best for dipping into. I’ve had a couple of blank tests too and it’s always cause it wasn’t saturated enough. I’m a bad aim it turns out Blush.

cunningartificer - We have to make banal small talk about customers shopping. I’d likely be performance managed if I wasn’t trying to chit chat about biscuits and such. Also as it happens you can only chat about the weather so many times in one shift or your brain melts.

So while I’m bored out of my head I do actually care whether those biscuits are nice/ if that frozen soffrito mix is just as good as doing it all fresh etc etc.

Urgh, yanbu. These threads are always unanimous when it comes to these completely inappropriate comments, yet most seem to have experienced them so there are plenty of these non-thinking fuckwits out there.
Aside from the 'were they planned?' questions, I bought some condoms for the first and last time in a shop at the age of about 20 and the woman said 'ohh, aren't you a bit young for these?'- what?!

YANBU. I'd complain. I'd have said at the time 'Oh, they're very personal questions. Now, what did you say it came to?' or other inane let's-move-on chat.

weird, check the instructions on the brand you are using, it should tell you about timing. I prefer the dipping in bowl much easier than the pee on the stick too

You normally can see the liquid reaching the "test" window and the change of colour there pretty much straight away - I am not very patient with tests....

Walkerbean16 · 23/01/2018 17:23

If you are using a sample from a bowl you nirmally have to hold it in for longer?

When i blught my test the cashier said sooo what are you hoping for a positive or a negative? I nearly started a thread on here as i felt it was so inappropriate! What if i desperately did want a baby or was really upset at the thought of being pregnant! Eejit!

Also I'm sorry for those of you that have experienced lossThanks I agree with a PP that I would imagine this type of thing would come under common sense rather than training!

I've done another one as there were two in the pack and still doing the same thing.

I weed into a bowl and took the 5 second sample from there this time, but it appears to have made no difference Blush

I'm a cashier at the moment and I'm shocked that she commented on it. I don't think it is a matter of training, it's a matter of common sense that you don't mention it! Whenever I get a test through my till I hold another item in the other hand so I can quickly scan them together and hand the test over with as little attention or fuss as I can, the same way I do with potentially embarrassing medicines. It's common sense and courtesy.
