In a terraced house, vair middle class, quiet village?
It would be seen & heard by both immediate neighbours.
Tbf my neighbours already know i'm not vair middle class so perhaps they wouldn't be surprised?!

My friends neighbours have done this. The noise is horrible and my friend struggles to sleep with it. she has a terminal illness so it is very sad but they feel they are entitled to it

And they're expensive to run and environmentally unfriendly.

I'm sure I remember an episode of Corrie where Cilla and Les installed a hot tub or jacuzzi in an upstairs room and it (and them) ended up in the sitting room.

Bar all the very relevant structural concerns, I'd be mightily pissed off if I were your neighbour. Having your hot tub on would hinder their enjoyment of their balcony. And of course, if it all goes wrong and it's a terraced property, the damage may well not be limited to your house. Does your insurance cover idiocy?

It's also really noisy as it runs (all day and all night) clicking in and out as it reaches and drops temperatures - I've had a few - a total luxury that I miss but they were always away from the house enough to not disturb us at night or the neighbours

Pity the neighbours, I wouldn't be impressed having one adjacent to my balcony.
Some people along the road from me had theirs craned over the roof onto their patio and the local seagulls love it 😳

You really need a survey done to see if your balcony is strong enough, really, really, really.

Report
FlyingElbows · 19/06/2017 17:50

Pmsl yes you should absolutely do that. And definitely video it so the world can laugh at what a monumentally stupid idea it is when the balcony collapses and you are left with tonnes of water everywhere and a ruined house!

OnionKnight · 19/06/2017 17:45

Hell no, there's too much potential for it to go wrong.

If you're determined to get a hot tub for your balcony please get the area professionally assessed first to see if it can handle the excess weight (basically the same as parking a family hatchback on your balcony) and check any insurance issues otherwise it could be a briefly wonderful but long term expensive mistake.

Oh and layzspas don't tend to just randomly burst. Normally when the pool part goes it's a slow leak puncture. It's thick plastic with a protective cover.

Get the balcony checked/reinforced and go for it.

Report
helpimitchy · 19/06/2017 17:24

Can't you just get a paddling pool in the back garden?

Report
HerOtherHalf · 19/06/2017 16:42

Even if the balcony can take the weight, what if it bursts? That's a helluva lot of water to mop up in the rooms underneath. Just fart in the bath like the rest of us commoners.

Terrible idea - when I was renovating an upstairs bathroom, I had to get flooring reinforced to be able to move a bathtub 90 degrees. A hot tub holds vastly more water and weighs a huge amount. At the very least get a structural engineer and your insurance company to sign off on it before even considering it.

just google hot tub on balcony - not only is it not an issue - in many hotels around the world it is seen as a symbol of great luxury!

of course it's an issue - you think that hotel balconies with hot tubs weren't specifically built to cope with them? Hmm

once filled, it will weigh about 3000lbs or 1.36 metric tonnes

Haha, go for it, it has given me a giggle, rather like a plot in a carry on film. I can just picture it. Enjoy OP.

if you enjoy it why not - who cares what the neighbours think - other than that they will probably be jealous!

just make sure that when you pop the champagne corks over the side of the balcony you don't hit them too often Grin

Weight aside, that's a lot of water and if it leaked and flooded the area below that would cause one hell of a nightmare. Insurers probably prohibit it too.
