To think that just because you're in a cycle race doesn't mean you can run a red light?

We nearly hit a cyclist today. It was a narrow miss. We came to a crossroads with traffic lights and needed to turn right. DH was driving. He was second behind another car in the queue. The lights changed to green and he pulled forward once the car in front did, and started to turn. He narrowly missed a cyclist coming from our left who was heading in the same direction as us (I.e our right, her straight on) and must have gone through a red light. Once we were on that road we realised she was one of a number of cyclists taking part in some sort of race.

There were no signs leading up to the crossroads, nor did we spot any on the road that we turned onto.

AIBU to think that she should have stopped at the red light? I appreciate she doesn't want to lose time, but she could have lost a lot more if we had hit her

YANBU. I compete in triathlons and if I thought the organisers were putting me and other road users at risk, I'd be livid. Races usually have a "deadzone" at lights where they stop the clock for you. No excuses for running a red light. Ever.

It was a triathlon event in Cumbria, which I only realised when I saw on FB that a friend's DH had competed in.

I was out on my bike today. Things I saw:

• Drivers texting
  
• Drivers not indicating

It's absolutely not allowed in any cycle event, and organisers always tell participants that they will be disqualified if they infringe rules of the road or engage in dangerous behaviour.

If it's an official.race then I'd expect traffic to be blocked off and them to be allowed to run red lights.
If you're certain you didn't pass any signs it may have been a fault of the organisers.

If it was an official race, the road should have been closed. YANBU.

Where was this? Wasn't the London to Brighton was it as that's not a race? Anyway, the cyclist should have stopped regardless.
