Ok this is meant to be a lighthearted from the start in no way am I belittling what is happening, but if I was Theresa May I would be getting pissed off with her bothering me every five minutes, meetings, letters etc. Yes we are all aware that when Scotland voted they did not know we were going to be voting out of the EU and yes they probably should have another vote on it when and I mean when the details have been finalised so you can make an informed decision, yes thats sensible. But she's like a dog with a bone, going on and on and on. Theresa May like her or loathe her has a very difficult job to do, nobody else has really put their head above the parapet to sort it and she needs time to get on with it. So sorry Nicola stop going all Braveheart on her ass and do one ffs you're not helping or is that the intention. If so here's a restraining order.

For sure Ma. Brexit is putting a lot of the "day job", North and South, on the back burner.
I think it's fair enough to table the referendum because it was on the SNP manifesto, and as I understand it, it's not imminent anyway. But yes, the govts in Holyrood and Westminster shouldn't be putting all on hold while this rumbles on.

Perhaps Nicola would care to comment on the latest Programme for International Assessment survey in which Scottish 15 year olds recorded their lowest results in science, reading and maths since the survey began 17 years ago. Since the SNP came to powered Scotland has dropped from 11th to 23rd place for reading, 11th to 24th place for maths and 10th to 19th for science. As education is devolved, I for one, would like to hear how she justifies this!

Of course Westminster will refuse permission for a second referendum.

Nicola will then have that decision overturned by the European courts......... I'm looking forward to watching all the tories spit feathers over that one.

"She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted". Ms Surgeon has agreed that waiting is reasonable. The party does have a mandate to push for a other referendum.

The EU referendum has been in the pipeline for several years, and the Scottish knew when they voted for Scotland to be independent (or not) that we may vote to leave the EU in the next few years. Yet the Scottish still voted to stay in the UK!

Sturgeon is an idiot, she is irritating, she is boring, and she is getting on my last nerve. In addition, every Scot I have spoken to, wishes she would STFU.

If Scotland leave the UK, it will be the biggest mistake of their lives, because they will not survive alone. They have pretty scenery, and a tourism industry, but fuck-all else that will make money.

If I were Theresa May, I would have knocked Jimmy Krankie Nicola Sturgeon out by now.

I am actually embarrassed for her now. It makes me cringe every time I see her face.

At least a best of 3 series of referenda. Mind you in the good old days aristocrats merely bribed each other so that was hardly democratic!

Perhaps we shoils have had a referendum about the % needed for Brexit or indyref terms!

"Is it any wonder Brits are disturbed by the fact our future is in the hands of people who refuse to engage with democratic processes, have zero understanding of the law or political process, and are incapable of adult debate?"

Hahahahahaha! This is a classic. Grin
Can we post this in the classics section? Foot stamping, refusing to accept a vote remainer, truly believes its the Out voters who this applies to. Brilliant. Defo one of the best statements Ive read on here for a while.

(Yep, Im incapable of adult debate.....with rubbish like this, but thanks for the LOL tonight, right cheered me up Grin

this is exactly why referenda are not viewed as a win-win for democracy, because the government of the day ends up implementing them, rather than a cross-party group which is especially critical when for things like Brexit and Independence, there isn't an overwhelming majority (i.e. 60%+) for them.

Personally i'd say the goal for serious constitutional changes like Brexit AND independence should be more than a 50% majority, there are many people that vote for things that turn out to be false and would've voted otherwise given a second chance and that's why the test should be higher for hard to reverse changes.

And ideally, the plans should be put to a General Election...

Fortunately a bit late for Brexit. Grin There is no way allowing the 48% to win the referendum would have been acceptable at all.

As for a General Election, I've no doubt Theresa May would have no problem holding one, seeing as Labour are in complete disarray but quite rightly her priority is seeing Brexit through to fruition.

Lou Grin

The thing I don't get is how far do you go?

Scotland? Edinburgh City? What if one ward in Edinburgh City voted remain whereas everyone else voted leave? It has to stop somewhere and it was made quite clear (one of the few things that was) that it was a U.K. wide referendum.

Of course England is going to 'overrule' the other countries of the U.K. - it has by far the largest population.

It wasn't a regional referendum

Scotland and Wales and NI and Gibraltar aren't exactly regions.. Hmm

Report
QIsForCube · 01/04/2017 20:09

The reason 'England gets to overrule that' is because it has a population of 53million whereas Scotland, Wales and Gibraltar only have about 8million. It wasn't a regional referendum - it was a U.K. wide one.

i think indyref#notanotherbloodyone is exactly in this category - we've had a brexit pushed through on a slim majority, do we want to add another indyref pushed through on a tiny majority if it went based on people protest voting about leaving the EU?

It'd be clearer if the referendum said, independence, + this type of EU membership will be pursued, and here are our plans to fund the deficit after independence/replace barnett funding.

But I doublt we'll get that, we'll get assertion and a vote for independence not tied to any specific EU contact or proper economic plans to fund the Scottish economy.

so why doesn't TM just agree to the referendum when Sturgeon wants it - in 18 to 24 months time? Why keep beating around the bush?

Surely it's obvious that there are more things to think about at the moment and that this isn't a good time for instability?

Anyway, if NS got her referendum and lost (which is what the polls consistently suggest) does anyone doubt for an instant that either she - or whoever replaced her - would quickly start screaming for another one?

YABU. If you don't agree with doing things democratically, go and live in North Korea.

I agree.

What gave just over half % of British to say this is how it should be for everyone?!

Thing is, it wasn't "democratically decided" - in Scotland, N.I. Gibraltar... Why would England overrule that? The empire finished long ago, but they still tell them what to do. Angry
