AIBU?

To think under 5s should not have Diet Coke.

I just think when parents give their children Diet Coke. They must have a lack of understanding regarding the awful ingredients like aspartame. Or they don't care.

I'm sorry who honestly thinks Diet Coke is healthier than fat coke.

I try and avoid cola and soft drinks for my children, but when they have them I make sure they have the sugar ones as I'd rather them have a bit of sugar then cancer causing chemicals.

I'm not even a food snob. I just hate diet drinks let alone dc having them.

I remember that Stars!!

And it was a shockingly short journey too. We couldn't work out how her baby had gotten that dehydrated in such a short time. I think everyone was telling her to just give the baby the coke!!

I was in the IKEA cafe once and a two year old was having a tantrum because they'd swapped the coke for healthier drinks and I must admit I could feel my judgy pants getting slightly stuck up my backside, but at least I had the good grace to know I was BU. YABU to think sugar is better for your kids than Aspartame too.

I wish people would stop with the pearl clutching over aspartame already. Normally the same people aren't bothered about chugging all manner other artificial things. The aspartame bandwagon is boring!

Wasn't there a thread a while ago about a Mum stuck on a boat who didn't have any water for her rapidly-dehydrating baby but refused to give said baby a mouthful of fizzy pop? Have I made that up?

I remember that I think that's extreme. What I mean is giving your dc Diet Coke (on a regular outing to café.

My under 5s have never had any coke, but it's the caffeine that worries me as well as all the other crap. DS1 who is 9 occasionally has lemonade or irn bru if we're eating out, but not cola, again because of the caffeine.

Yeah, I definitely don't know anyone personally who gives their toddler cans of coke / Diet Coke. If that makes me sheltered, then sheltered I must be! Grin

I've seen loads of young children with fruit shoots though. They're just like squash aren't they? I have no idea as I don't buy them.

Aspartame is dodgy
[citation needed]

It's artificial it can't be good for us
Do you say that about the swathes of pharmaceuticals we use to treat illnesses daily?

I definitely wouldn't let mine have those awful energy drinks but mine have just had diet cokes as we were in the pub for lunch.

Both of my children (2 & 5) have drunk diet coke. I don't buy them bottles or cans of it. But they have had some of mine.

I can't be bothered to create a "rule" over it. Neither drinks enough for it to be a habit. Last time they had it was Christmas eve at the cinema when they shared my small diet Pepsi. I had about half, DH had some and the children had the rest.

Before that? Not sure. Maybe on holiday in October at PIL.

I can't really see any issue. They drink milk, water and squash the rest of the time. And I genuinely couldn't care what other people do.

Well on a regular basis in place of water or the milk is obviously shit.

Occasionally at a party then whats the big deal.

You realise there's equal or maybe even more sugar or sweetners in many other foods and drinks aimed at small children. Unless you feed only organic and natural sugar only and haribo or raisins or Iceland orange shit has never touched your child's lips then I think you should probably take a look at your own kids diet. Make sure it's perfect before you get knickers in a twist Over a glass of soda

I don't really think children should be having milk as a drink regularly, it's really fattening.

It's not a perfect diet my kids have but if they have a treat it is usually something like a bar of green and blacks or a cake I bake myself. Not perfect but all natural ingredients.

I'm sorry for anyone who knows so little that they think coke contains fat and aspartame must be bad for us because it's "artificial."

Ha ha ha

I can't stand the stuff however it makes me laugh how many people on MN post up their toddler/child's routine as they are us pest their kid barely eats and are completely oblivious to the fact that the kid drinks a gallon of milk a day might have something to do with why the kids not hungry...

Honestly no one has heard term fat coke. It's another way of saying normal coke. I know fat isn't in coke.

But children need fat. Full fat milk is a great drink for children, I believe.

I don't give kids diet or "fat" coke, OP. I let them snort the real thing. They seem happy enough so far.

They need fat but not in those sorts of quantities. I mean, cows milk is designed for calves, not children.

I don't let mine have any sort of fizzy drink really. They are 4 and 18months. We actually got the 4yo a glass of lemonade when we went out for a meal for her 4th birthday as a treat but she didn't like it. The younger one has occasionally had a sip of mine or dp's Pepsi Max when we've accidentally left a cup within reach but I'd never willingly let her have it.

As they get older they'll be allowed it occasionally if they want but They are still too little imo for all that caffeine, sugar and what ever else is in fizzy drinks.
