To think ive spoilt myself with Dulux paint?

When we moved into our house we quickly painted the rooms. Over the last year we have been going back through them and making them nice.

Wilkos paint did the job, good range of colours, good price, noce enough finish.

Then I painted the master bedroom in Dulux Goose Down. It was fucking amazing - one coat, looks lush, dried quick and I stroke the walls when I walk in there.

Just gone to do one of the living room walls today with Wilkos "finest" and Im so cross. Claggy and uneven, dries transparent and has took me twice as long to do one wall than it did in the other room.

I should never have made the swap!

Its only white too; would I be mad to drive out this instant and buy some proper paint?

Most people don't prep properly for f&b so write it off as rubbish

F&B is hated by lots of decorators, and lots of DIYers can't get good coverage. However it is possible to get amazing results with it, if you know how to paint with it. Comparing it to dulux is ridiculous although if you don't know how to paint with it Dulux will give better results for amateurs and decorators who like to think they know it all.

We had a firm do our flat in F&B Strong White. 2 coats, absolutely stunning. Colour subtly changes throughout the day as lighting changes due to the crushed minerals it has in it. Stunning. They said it's tricky to get a good finish with you can't slap it on.

Dulux really isn't that good quality. It is very forgiving, that is it's saving grace. A toddler could splat it on with a yard brush and still get a fairly even finish. Unfortunately it doesn't wash well, is too thick to spread easily, meaning it makes your arms ache from rollering and is expensive. B&Q Colours is ok although still too thick for me and Crown goes on lovely but doesn't cover that well. I prefer acrylics like Valspar or Leyland. Can you tell I hate fucking painting.

I've just finished painting our living room in Dulux Goose Down and it was so easy to use, went on well and I'm very impressed with the finish. Goose Down must be very popular at the moment but it is a lovely colour. I'm very impressed with it and won't go back to paying over the odds for Farrow & Ball.

We used Crown 'Breatheasy' in the dc's rooms and I found that has lasted well, easy to use and only needed one coat for a good finish.

Another Valspar fan here. Fabulous range of colours and great coverage.

F&B has always been a nightmare for us: so watery and needs so many coats. Think there's a huge element of Emporer's New Clothes about it.

We've just painted our kitchen in F&B arsenic after only ever having bought cheap paint previously. I love it! It went on like a dream (even though we're both crap at decorating) and the colour is so beautiful. The downside is I never want to use any other paint ever again!

Bit the bullet and went back to Dulux. Took less than 1 hour to do this wall, a damp sight faster and much more enjoyable than the chappy Wilkos stuff disclaimer I otherwise bloody love wilkos

I can literally see it drying well before my eyes (maybe I need to get out more).

You can tell farrow and ball on a wall. Yes it's harder to get on than the cheaper stuff but there is a softness and depth to it (and similar makes like little Greene). The two rooms I have done in dulux look like dulux.

Clankboing, paint white first to knock out the blue colour. I love paint!

Notearheresal if you are looking for wood paint, Neptune is the way to go. It is poisonous dear but you will only need to paint it and it will last years and years. It's the best wood paint available, it's for furniture and kitchens etc.
get a sample. And a loan!!

My Dad used to do most of our home P&D. He used paint and wallpaper from a local supplier called Hickes and Weatherburn in Leeds. They moved from their original premises a few years ago but I don't know if they are still trading. Paint was mixed on site to customer's colour and quantity spec.

Interesting that a few folk like Johnstone's paint. I believe Leyland paint is good stuff too.

My dh knows lots of painters through his work. They always say Johnstones is good. It does look lovely in my hallway. I just painted a bedroom and am trying to cover blue with yellow from Homebase. Impossible. I'm trying one more coat then I'm off to buy another brand if it doesn't work.

We used johnstones for our bedroom and is lovely stuff. Dulux can be a bit watery.

We've recently redecorated our whole house and for the living room had used dulux as got it on offer... We found it ok but used Valspar from B&Q for all other rooms... You can literally choose any colour and they will mix it up.
We ended up going premium... Matt for walls and ceilings and eggshell for woodwork and have been so happy with the results! So much easier to paint on than dulux and much better finish! Could not recommend you go Valspar premium more highly!
We used half as much paint and have some left for any touch ups in the future.
Considering repainting the living room as I feel the dulux finish is just not as perfect!

My Uncle is a decorator and he says the absolute best paint you can get is Crown. Plus if you have a trade Crown decorators centre near you, go there as the trade paint is even better (anyone can go), and they can mix any colour you want.

We've just been decorating with dulux and f&b. It's ended up costing roughly the same in paint as the dulux needed more coats that the f&b. Maybe it depends on the walls in your house or the colour. I've used wilko in the past and thought it was fine, but it was one coat on top of a similar colour. I hear good things about little green.

Ive been searching for a completely 'flat' white paint for my woodwork. F&B do one but, for white paint, I won't pay their prices. Yesterday I discovered Johnstones flat oil paint. It's amazing

Dulux Trade Diamond Matt tinted to F and B Tallow and mixed 1:2 with Diamond Matt white.
I'd bathe in it if I could.

Used to buy dulux until a decorator friend put me onto Johnstone's. Never went anywhere else since.

Once you try Colortrend paint, nothing else compares. It is very expensive but if you buy 10 litres and use it for 2 rooms, then it's not too bad. It looks great, it really lasts and is still perfect years later. I recommend it to everyone.

Best paint in the world and colours are beautiful.
