AIBU?

To be fucked off with time-wasters?

I've been a MN for a little while, and it helped enormously during my break up with my ex - tons of positive stories from women who had been through it and not only survived, but thrived. But I have wasted far too many evenings offering advice/kind words etc to threads which have been pulled for being, basically, bollocks. I've done it again tonight. Why the fuck do people think pulling this shit is ok?

It should hopefully all die down come September.

But I'm in agreement with a PP that if you offer genuine helpful advice even to the trolliest of trolls then someone somewhere may just read it and be helped by it.

Was it pulled? Probably because she got outed if so?

The house sitter one wasn't fake was it?! Maybe I'm naive but I didn't get that impression.

Not especially surprised that the deja vu arrest one was pulled.

Was the horse / cat / bad house sitter one fake?

If someone is desperate enough for attention to make shit up they probably need it as much as someone that would genuinely post about something.

Personally a hoax wouldn't worry me that much. Unless they're trying to fleece you.

Although I got accused of being a troll several times tonight.

I don't understand why people would do the troll thing.

I don't get what people gain from lying online to gain opinions from people they don't know about something that isn't even true.

Even when I was 10 I would have thought that was pretty boring and weird.

I'm terrified to start posts about my quite frankly ridiculous life for fear of being labelled a troll. A Real life friend was banned after name changing to post something hugely embarassing and was reported for trolling. That made me wary.

I'm shit at spotting the trolls. I've been on MN for nearly seven years I think!

I've reported a couple of threads and neither were trolls Blush

And I don't know what thread you're talking about which is annoying because I wish I'd read it Grin mainly because I have twins! Love to give my opinions on those Wink

Thanks all, for your replies. I love MN, and the diversity of opinions on here, and am definitely becoming more aware of what constitutes trolling/ troughling /whatever you bloody call it. Will continue to post my (not always welcome) advice, and am very glad I know that 'DTs' usually refers to twins, and not alcohol withdrawal.

I think it depends on where you come from Crunchy

I've heard it pronounced both 'troal-ing' and 'trol-ing' on the news.

Feeling much calmer. Though still pissed off about 'LoreleiVictoriaGilmore' posting on that thread.... Fuck the fuck off. I'm her BFF.

Yes that's the one. The sex change bit gave it away!

Cats are nice though....although to be honest mine's pretty unsociable and would probably be really happy living under a bridge. :)

Crunchymum · 26/07/2016 22:35

Maybe it's more like 'trol-in' actually. Still doesn't sound right?

Report
Crunchymum · 26/07/2016 22:34

I can't believe trolling is prononced 'trough-ling' and not how it looks?

hassled yes, there is that. Have read several threads which were pulled, and seen some invaluable pieces of advice in amongst the crap.

choc the house/horse one? This was my 'final straw'. It was as complicated as a Chekov novel, I made my doubts clear (which as a newbie, maybe should have waited) then ended up apologising, only to see thread pulled anyway. In future, will only engage in conversations about the possibility of getting a cat.

I think you've got to take the view that even if you've wasted time advising a troll, MN has so many users that it's perfectly possible someone somewhere read your advice and benefited from it - someone in a similar situation to the made-up bollocks but who never would have posted about it. Advice is still advice, and you don't know who's reading it.

Back around December time, quite a few MNetters asked HQ if we could have just one topic, where name changing was not allowed.

So if you posted in that topic, could only do it under one nickname - much like Mumsnet Local.

We were told it would be a 'technical nightmare' for some reason, but that they would definitely look into it in the future, if people still wanted it.

Well people still do and it took HQ over a month to come back to the repeatedly bumped (and reported) thread in Site Stuff, only to give a wishy-washy answer that basically meant no.

But I think it would be good for Mumsnetters who want to stick around on MN, but are sick to death of the trolling, especially as it's much worse when the schools break up.

very I'm still new to forums - those sites are still unexplored territory! What would technically be considered a 'time-waster'?!
