AIBU?

AIBW to shout 'pizzas here!' so the delivery person doesn't know I'm alone?

Am I being weird?

OH think it's hilarious that I do this when I'm home alone & order pizza. I dont know why I do it but I know my friend does too. Maybe so the driver doesn't think I'm a greedy cow? Not that it matters.

Anyone else?

When my DCs were babies/toddlers and the postman knocked on the door I'd do a "hold on dc, I'm just downstairs" backwards yell as I opened the door to remind him I was a harassed mum of little ones as justification for still being in my PJs/a towel at gone 10am.

I think he just thought knew I was a lazy cow!!

I used to do this when I lived alone! I thought I was the only one!

Your op made me laugh! I think it's funny but I don't do it - It's never occurred to me that the delivery driver really thinks or cares about whether I'm greedy or not.

That's nuts!

Anxiety can lead us to strange behaviour!

I don't shout things, but even if I'm home alone and getting a takeaway I order DHs usual order as well. We order from about 4 or 5 different places so they'd know if suddenly there was only one thing being ordered and me answering, that I'll be home alone. Sometimes it means the dogs are lucky and get takeaway. Other times it just means I eat it all usually the latter.

I once spent a whole taxi journey chatting with a random driver about how I was about to go on holiday for a whole week+. Being quite a paranoid person, when I realised what I'd done I made him drop me at a completely different end of the street.

I'm also paranoid when loading the car to go on holiday (we've no driveway). My DH thinks it's hilarious as he is the complete opposite. I'm constantly looking out for shady types, who might notice all my holiday gear going into the boot.

What the OP says makes sense, it isn't utter nonsense or poor criminal profiling. Having worked as a probation officer for 16 years many offenders target people in this way. Also working for a registered company won't stop them! They're criminals with low morals so who they work for won't register on their conscience!!

I delivered pizzas for a few months to raise holiday cash years ago.

I would not have given a second thought to who opened the door or even noticed if they were alone/calling to someone. take money and deliver next pizza was the only thought.

some utter nonsense and very poor criminal profilingHmm

Delivery drivers don't worry me. My boyfriend from uni days, his household would say "see you later Boris" whenever they left the house empty. They were 3 guys, and terrified at city life when at uni. (To be fair, lots of student houses were targeted for burglaries).
Boris was their spider plant.

And to think I worry about my youngest son who's just started work as a pizza delivery boy in case he gets robbed by a 'customer'! Smile

Nowhere will bloody deliver take away to us where we live, too far away, sob... I don't think I ever ordered take away just for me even when I lived in London though - although like another poster who said similar I'm happy to eat out alone and have hundreds of times... I wonder why... I think it feels wasteful as if I'm feeling lazy and it's just me I'll have cereal or something odd that I secretly crave but can't serve the family like a massive bowl of frozen peas with lots of pepper and butter Blush

If I were a burglar, I would conclude from this thread that I should target houses where people have called loud goodbyes on going out the front door!

Nair I mentioned it one night when a delivery came and I realised that they probably know I'm on my own when I do that, given I didn't do it when partner was obviously there (seen through the window)... There's obviously a big flaw in my thinking haha

I've never done it when having food delivered, no.

I do say "bye, be good, see you later" when leaving the house. But I'm actually talking to the dogs Grin

The really interesting question is how OH knows? Is he a lurker?

Report
iMogster · 28/05/2016 18:46

When there are multiple people in the house, they know pizza is here, because they heard the door bell/ knocker and saw you walking to the front door. Therefore shouting 'pizza is here' may highlight you are alone and nervous.

I used to deliver pizzas. You can't begin to imagine how little mental energy I expended on how many people were potentially going to consume the delivery. And had I had any reason to believe the delivery was for one person, again, you can't begin to imagine how little I would care

KingLooieKatz. That made me laugh. I think many of us 'over think' other people's thoughts about us 😁
