I am dental phobic, having root canal treatment tomorrow. Already cancelled once because I wimped out. Have to go tomorrow or may lose dentist.

To make matters worse I am at a show tomorrow for dds birthday. I'm going to be in agony aren't I? Sad dentist said because it was so infected I would like have problems afterwards.

Please help :(

I've had three root canals and honestly they're a doddle! I don't know why they have such a bad reputation?! Maybe from the days when dentistry was still a bit primitive? I've never been in any pain at all after the anaesthetic wears off.
Only thing is they take around 45mins to an hour so it's a bit boring! Going to the dentist would be so much better if you were able to read a magazine at the same time haha.
Don't cancel - you'll be so glad when it's done and the tooth is no longer causing you pain, plus think how proud of yourself you'll be for getting it done!

Whoops just seen you're already there - well done and hope it's going smoothly!

I did it.
Thanks so much everyone. I very nearly chickened out last night.
The numbing was difficult because of the infection. I had enough anesthetic to floor a horse.

Just got to go back for the crown now

You'll be fine.

I lied about the worse pain being my jaw being open for so long.

It was definitely the rubber thing they put around my tooth that pinged off and hit me in the eye :( that smarted AND I looked like I had been crying which totally miffed me as I had actually been very brave....

I had a root canal some about 4 years ago.
Honestly, because I was in that much agony from the infection in my tooth I was relieved when it came to my appointment. I remember being in work beforehand and I didn't worry about the root canal- all I could think about was the pain I was in and that thankfully it would be over soon.
Afterwards, the horrible pain from the infection seemed to have disappeared almost instantly. All I was left with was a bit of swelling which went down within a couple of days and I took some ibuprofen to ease the, not throbbing pain, but dull achey feeling from all the stress.

They will get rid of the root/ pulp/ infection and clean it out, and put a temporary filling there which stays for about a week until it's all dried out. And then they will seal it off like they would a normal filling. My tooth took to it ok (touch wood that carries on)

I'm not sure how long the tooth lasts for after root canal treatment. Does anybody know? I'm hoping a long time as it is one of my very front teeth :( I'm extremely paranoid about my teeth and the anxiety I feel about my teeth going bad/me losing them is quite extreme. :( im always checking in the mirror and then when I think I've spotted something I panic. I feel the slightest twinge and I again panic. I take very good care of my teeth but unfortunately I don't think genetics are on my side :(

Well done OP!

Feeling I had root canal on a front tooth and its still there at least 15 years after. I've just had a repair to the filling at the back of it and the dentist didn't seem to think there was any risk of losing it. It also has a veneer on the front (hit by a swing when I was 10 and turned grey) so there is not a whole lot of actual tooth!

Thanks everyone!
The anaesthetic has JUST worn off which shows how much I had Blush

No pain as yet but planning to take some brufen just before I go out just in case!

Take some painkillers now, before the anaesthetic fully wears off, and take some with you for later.

Just the crown to go, so that should be straightforward :) I had root canal a couple of years ago and it's been great since

OP, the discomfort after treatment is nothing compared to a split tooth and infection going into your jaw. Please believe me when I say that!

Well done, what a fantastic achievement. I hope you won't be afraid of the dentist anymore, it is so liberating to beat a phobia.

I hope you got to the dentist OK. I had a fear of dentists until I (a) signed on with my present one who is lovely, and (b) had breast cancer treatment. After that there is nothing worse that a dentist can do to me!

As I type I have an abscess on a top canine but not in pain, just sore. So I must grid my lions to see him on Tuesday. Typical it would happen over Easter.

You are going to grid your lions?

I've had root canal a few times and it has always been a relief. I've been numbed up and whilst sitting there with your mouth open for quite a long time isn't great, the actual root canal has been fine. The injections to numb me up have been the worst of the pain during the appointment. And I remember one when I had a toddler and a baby I very nearly fell asleep during the treatment Wink
