To ask how many nights a week you drink alcohol?

I have cut down, but I'm not sure it's enough? I think my thinking may be skewed?

I was drinking wine every night. For quite some time! And not just a glass either. Generally a bottle, or even more, every night.

For the past few months, I have cut my drinking back to 3 nights a week only.

The other 4 nights a week, I have no alcohol at all. I have lemonade with dinner and a few decaff coffees later on.

Is this ok? Is 3 nights of drinking still too many? Or do you think this seems ok?

I have lost all perspective.

I really vary. Right now it's pretty good because I'm moderately skint - am having about two bottles a month; most of it on book club night, then one other bottle over 3 nights. When I have more money I socialise more and will drink more.

Luckily as I get older more of us are finding we can't tolerate alcohol much and so I meet friends for tea more often.

I probably have a bottle of wine over Friday and Saturday night. Nothing outside of that unless it's a rare special occasion / function. On a night out more - g&t, wine and a cocktail probably.

I drank shit loads. I no longer do. In fact it was the 'DRY' thread in relationships that gave me the strength to quit drinking. My life has changed immeasurably for the better. It was very hard but 'easy' at the same time. Please go and take a look in there. I can't link as my phone doesn't like to copy links!

I have a blow out once every 8-10 weeks, I have a great time but don't like even having 1 drink whilst looking after my children, not because I think it's bad but im a worrier AND I can't really just have one. if they stay with nan and grandad me and my husband will get quite drunk yes, share a bottle of prosecco and half a bottle of gin each.

I agree that a lot of people on this thread drink far less than people I know in real life,

Most people I know don't drink regularly. Mostly meals out or occasionally at meals or

I suppose we are all biased by those we choose to socialise with.
What I don't like is feeling chased out of a thread where people are asked how much they drink.
It doesn't attract more those who don't than those who do, as seen by looking at all posts.
But such posts immediately discourage non drinkers from posting.
I can only think of a reason why you who laid down on the non drinkers (or low drinkers) who posted, and that's because you would rather prefer to think that everyone else drinks as heavily as you and you are OK.
How about just posting how much you drink and leave the jibes aside?

(Because non drinkers could say the same of the drinkers descending on these threads to justify their drinking)

I probably have an alcoholic drink about once a fortnight.

I buy a bottle of wine on Friday and drink it over 2-3 nights. My dad's alcoholic so I'm wary but I also think that's reasonable and for 4-5 days a week my liver gets a break. I did dry january this year which helped me work out why I drink.

lweji I assume aimed at me? It wasn't a jibe at all just an observation of my social circle. I couldn't give two hoots if people choose not to drink! How does it discourage you from posting - its an opinion?

I previously posted how much I drink and I do actually think that 3 bottles of a wine a week is excessive.

I'm probably drinking far too much, a habit which has gradually increased, sparked off by a hugely stressful time a few years back.

Thing is, a bottle of wine is so easy to drink. One glass (depending on the size of the glass) especially if shared between Dp & I, can be easily consumed in an evening.

I need to cut down too, OP. It's something I never thought I'd hear myself say. My df had a huge problem with drink Sad

If I don't have wine in the fridge I'm fine, I'm not twitchy, I don't have withdrawals, I can drink water or something nice and cold but if there's wine, I will drink it.

I don't like the feeling of not having wine in the fridge though!

I drink too much now. I have two vodkas a night and more on Friday/Saturday nights (3 or 4) so am just within the recommended limits I think but it feels too much to me. I was in this habit a few years ago and only stopped it by quitting drinking for a year and it has since crept up (not to what it was before though). I should really stop again.

Some really supportive comments on here, notably MrsP. You can do it Blonde

I didn't think I had an issue until my booking in appointment. MW asked how many units did I drink. My face must have been like Hmm so she said a bottle of wine is X amounts, completely skipped by the glass. I lied and said no more than one bottle a week as it only dawned on me then how much I had been drinking.

I'm making a point of not drinking after baby is born so I don't fall back into bad habits of binging. Occasionally is fine.

BTW I'm not drinking whilst pregnant. Couldn't even stomach it no matter what my opinion on that debate is.

Report
Skiptonlass · 19/02/2016 23:09

I've not had a drink for well over a year now, due to pregnancy, hyperemesis and then just frankly not fancying it while looking after a baby.
I have to say, I like not drinking. My sleep quality has improved a lot.
I don't think I'll go tt- I've no desire to never drink again, but having a year off has certainly reset my relationship with alcohol.

I drink half a bottle of wine every night. Or two beers. I just love it.

It's a lot less than it has been for most of my adult life...!

I used to drink a lot pre dc. Then I had the kids, ended up a single parent and it was only the odd weekend I had off that I'd go out with friends and get completely hammered.

I've had deteriorating health since 2006 and am now on a variety of drugs. We actually went out last weekend to a charity fundraiser and I had two bottles of bulmers cider. I was pissed. On two bottles :o. I guess because I rarely drink now (why add a hangover to my usual pain) that I'm now a cheap date. Dp normally drinks and I drive because I'm happy to. Not that we go out much.

I don't think it's fair to knock people who say they don't drink or rarely do. You wouldn't knock someone for saying they don't smoke.

Report
pieceofpurplesky · 19/02/2016 23:37

When my exh left I drank too much. Could polish off a bottle a night to numb the pain.
Last September I made a new rule only to have a drink if I go out - and apart from Christmas I have stuck to it. I am out for cocktails tomorrow - first drink in a month.
Op you can do it - you will feel better about yourself

Meant to read as occasional drinking rather than occasional binging but I probably would do that on special occasions Blush

I admire people that don't drink or don't drink often. They don't have the bloody hangover! Accepted this is my choice! Every time I say never again....I'm with you Skip

On average, 1-2 nights a week. Very rarely more. That's probably a bottle of wine over 2 nights, at home. DH doesn't drink much, but if we have friends or family over we drink a bit more.

When I was single and childless I used to go out and drink a lot more - now too tired and skint, but I do still enjoy wine and cocktails in moderation!

I rarely drink, maybe once a month and it's usually out with a meal, DP drinks 2-3 times a month but never more than a few pints or couple of spirits, we aren't heavy drinkers and FIL is 9 years sober thanks to AA.

The first step to cutting down on drinking is accepting and acknowledging there is a potential problem, which you have done, congratulations!

You could compare it to the weetabix/cake breakfast thread where everyone appeared to be up poaching eggs every morning
I think I love you. Someone once told me that I should be eating not just poached eggs but poached eggs with asparagus. Or avocado, Something.

This thread is representative, on unscientific average, of zero of my friends and family. We like a nice bottle -or several with our Sunday lunch. We drink nice pints of beer, talk about the framing devices of film v books not joking-- and have seven different types of gin in our kitchen cupboard.

I drink a few cans anything from every night to no nights, depending on how I feel and what I fancy.
I only ever drink lager, all other alcohol gives me a hangover and just doesn't appeal to me, I am that weird person who buys wine to cook with and then freezes it in icecube trays!
I never drink so much I couldn't deal with an emergency and am fine with my alcohol consumption, I think the point from this thread is that if you are not happy with it, you need to change it.

We have wine open most nights, but I usually just have a glass of low-alcohol fizz (4%) then a very small amount of red wine with dinner. I love the taste of wine with food, but loathe feeling drunk or even tipsy. I drink tons of water, almost 2 litres each evening, so my bit of wine is probably diluted quite a lot.

Well done for cutting down OP.

I used to drink a bottle of wine most nights - mostly out of boredom. DH and I decided we weren't going to drink at home any more, just have a beer/ glass of wine when we went out. We're a month and a half in (I have bought a couple of those mini wine bottles and drank them at home so haven't stuck to it rigidly). It was a real wrench at first, but I do feel much better for it. We've lost some weight without really trying and I feel a million times better when I wake up in the morning with a clear head.

I'm with the drunkards on here. Every night I have a nice red wine with dinner - at least two glasses, maybe three sometimes. Ha. The only reason I have not to drink would be that there's no wine in the house - and I consider it an organisational failure if there's no wine in the house.

Wine is the drink of the gods Wine
