Went to Bluewater today. Keep hearing how fantastic Five Guys burgers are!
So myself and DS 15 popped in for lunch all excited.
Can honestly say it tasted no better than Burger King except 5 times the price. Would have expected so much better. Anyone else think Five Guys are shit. Apart from GBK where else on the high street is good.

There was a little article in a Ch4 TV show last night about burgers. They were looking at bacteria levels in gourmet burgers, which are being served cooked as customers like them...rare, medium rare etc.

I think that Byrons was found to have traces of listeria in their rare burger. (am happy to be corrected on this!) The message was basically, get your burger cooked all the way through.

That is all. Grin

And five Guys? YABU. Bloody love them! Grin
Shake Shack has just opened near us. Looking forward to trying that.
GBK have been shit the last few times we've been, but that was years ago. maybe they're better now?

I went to Meat Market last night for research purposes. The staff were very good, friendly & spoke good English. The burgers are the two thin patty style and all of them come with cheese in some way or another. I had a green chilli cheeseburger, it wasn't painfully hot, which was slightly disappointing as I like the searing feeling. We tried the Dead Hippie fries but they went a bit soggy, they are fries served in a rectangular loaf tin with onions & cheese on top. We liked the style but not the content and as I said before, the staff were very good.

Haven't tried 5 guys yet and you're not selling it to me! Was keen to try it when I heard it was opening in my city, but when I went there, the setup didn't appeal (for some reason, probably the prices, I didn't expect it to look like a fast food place - thought it would be more restauranty) and the hygiene rating on the door was shockingly bad, so we moved on.

Best burger I've had in recent years was in a Bills restaurant. Not quite the same, as only one type of burger on offer as its not a burger joint, but bloody lovely.

I am so over the brioche bun craze - nothing ruins a good burger more than a sweet tasting bun b

I'd like you all to know that I am on a health kick and trying to lose some lbs. Where I work, within a 10 minute walk/ taxi ride I have the following establishments

  1. Patty and Bun
  2. Bleeker street burger
  3. Burger and Lobster
  4. Meat Mission

Plus COUNTLESS other burger places. I CRIED over my green salad and salivated at the prospect of a lovely burger (and chips) instead.

I held firm today! But I fear it is only a matter of time before I succumb. Bleeker street or meat mission are top contenders.

It's all your fault MNETTERS!!!! Grin

I'm not a huge fan of burgers, but I quite like Five Guys. We all get the small burger (the 'ordinary' sized ones are enormous!) and only one portion of chips (there's enough for 4!). I like being able to choose what goes on, and that it's fresh. And I love the chips!

I love 5 guys! The meat in the burger is excellent and the fries are fab too:)

No comparison between them and other fast food chains, imo.

Venus maybe the cooks at our branch are just a bit crap! Last time we were there the chips were actually quite undercooked. And bland. I like a chunky chip (I like any chip, really) but they just weren't good. These things can vary a lot from branch to branch sometimes though.

Another vote for Almost Famous. They are the best I've had, and the bacon bacon fries and the pig and waffle fries are amazing. I'm moving to Liverpool this year so will have one on the doorstep!

Five Guys are expensive when compared to Almost Famous, but their fries are nice.

Shanto I would eat there every day if I could. You also need to try Reds, it is the ultimate in Bbq, you can actually get a bin lid full of meat and the onion rings are the size of wheels ! Town has some of the most fabulous food places

YouandMe - I'm surprised about the chips at your local branch of Handmade Burger, they are one of the best things at ours. Real potatoey goodness! Not skinny fries though - I guess some people would prefer that. I can't comment on the meat burgers but my meat loving family like them. The veggie patty selection is very varied which is a real treat for me as a lifelong veggie who likes all the trappings of a burger except the meat :)

5 guys is quite nice but shockingly expensive for what it is!

The chips are amazing though.

But I am just really cross that everything is cooked in peanut oil. It seems so unnecessary when so many have severe peanut allergies. Plus I think they should put much clearer warnings on the outside of their restaurants as for someone with a severe peanut allergy it could be life threatening even to walk into the restaurant (big boxes of peanuts everywhere)

I love Five Guys, never had a bad one either here or in the US. I love Shake Shack, even the veggie burger! Grin I also like Red Dog Saloon in London.

Donge I am obsessed with almost famous! I even have a t shirt. Being in London I am surrounded by amazing burgers but those guys are the best. I'm moving to Manchester next year and I can't wait to eat there all the time!

pottering the Byron in Newcastle is ace. DS1 chose it for his birthday meal out and the staff were great, food top notch. I could eat the courgette fries all day...

In answer to your question YABU five guys are good, very similar to shake shack, good American burgers far far better than macds or Burger King, but not the best

I HATE HATE HATE GBK I think they are over priced and bland.

I live in East London and it feels like there is a burger place on every corner.

I like patty and bun, it's a bit fussy and lots of different flavours. (Chain)

Meat mission is amazing, but that's a restaurant as opposed to fast food. (Small chain)

My ultimate favourite for just a plain, but delicious burger, is Bleeker St in Spitalfields. I would recommend everyone check out Bleeker St. (Independent) I think they are the best burger in London!

Byron are good, I think. If you are in John Lewis in Oxford Street, Ham Holy Burger is also worth trying.

We love Five Guys. Can't believe people are comparing them to mcds or Burger King, think they taste like plastic food in comparison. Agree it's very expensive though. Best burger I've had hands down though was patty 'n'bun. Wow!!! Found GBK to be too dry and too try hard, shakes were good though.

I'm not so keen on the Handmade Burger Co. I'm not sure if it's just the one near me, but the chips are terrible and the burgers are just OK. Brilliant milkshakes though.

Fluffyears I think Byron are supposed to be expanding up to Glasgow and Edinburgh. I know they've got planning permission to convert an old bank on North Bridge in Edinburgh, but I'm not sure if they have a site in Glasgow or not.
