I really hate what my dsis is going to name her son. She was keeping it a secret(probably to stop any negative comments) but dn let slip.

I, of course, will keep quiet and give dsis the appropriate comments when she announces the name.

Please help me get over it!!

Isn't Britney Spear's kid called Preston?

Report
AcrossthePond55 · 02/12/2015 14:42

The only 'American connection' I can figure is that Britney Spears named one of her sons Preston. It certainly isn't a common name where I am either PoorFanny.

Was someone on the paternal side's surname Preston, by any chance? I know a lot of names which are deemed "American" are actually English surnames and used to honour, or remember, that part of their lineage. You'd be surprised by how many names accepted as "normal" first names today began as surnames way back when... (I went to school with a boy whose surname was Preston, incidentally, and he was a lovely lad whose first name was his mother's maiden name! English, too, not American, and he was born 40 years ago, so...)

Toffeeboffin - Darwin is a cool name. So much so, that when I was 13, I called my dog it. Grin

Also, when I was pregnant with DD (19), my mother tried to convince me to mangle her (ie my mother's) first and middle name into a made up name for my child. I didn't. Actually, I remember asking her if she was insane and kept quiet that I was giving my DD a somewhat common, but very classical name until she'd been born! Had I not, my DD would have been called Jances Hmm. When my DS was born, I'd learned not to discuss names with anyone, because there's always going to be someone out there who finds fault - and often unnecessarily.

So, OP, yes, YABU.

I'm Confused at the idea of it being american. My mum had 2 cousins, called Preston and Seymour. Uncle Seymour died in his 30's, he was such a lovely man. Uncle Preston is still going strong - he's in his 70's now. Absolutely lovely man, twinkly eyed charmer! They are from a small town in Northern Ireland. I suppose if you like someone with the name, it helps Smile

At least it wasn't Pubert or something.

Oh, x posted. It's not American. Blush

I don't blame you. Is there actually an American connection; which would make it easier?

However, you won't notice it after a while it will just be such a part of him.

Your sister was rude about your son's name? You could say exactly what she said, humourously obviously, give her a wink and a smile, and then it's over.

I was also confused about the name being deemed American. My in-depth research (30 seconds on Google) revealed Preston to be an English (baby?) name which derives from the term priest's town/estate.

However, another 20 seconds revealed that the Urban Dictionary definition of Preston from 2009 is that of a cute, blonde-haired, blue-eyed boy who's really great in bed. (Sleeps all through the night, I guess!) Used as in "Wow, that Brad! He's such a Preston!"

Again, learning something new every single day thanks to mumsnet!

You will get used to it. My mother announced that ds name was HORRIBLE when we named him. FFW 11 years and she said " I always liked the name Conrad its such a good and strong name"

(I was good and didnt say no you hated it at first)

Just ask her if that is where he was conceived. That is why children are named after places. Might put her off.

Christ, I thought it was going to be Trevor or Dweasil. I live in the US, Preston isn't a name known in parts around here. We have tons of Logans, Spencers, Miguel's, Judes, Gabriel's, Connor's, Joses, Dmitris, Joshuas, Jed's, Franciscos and Blakes, not one Preston.

There's much worse out there.

I don't have a strong opinion on it.

Slithery is a brilliant name. Like Sir Hiss.

Could be worse. She could have called him 'Heaven' like the lad who told ds2 he was ugly and had jug ears today and received a hefty punch in the guts from ds for his troubles Little shite.

LMAO at Ramsbottom, it could always be worse! YANBU to dislike the name Preston, it's not my sort either but since this isn't one of those cases where the name will scar the child for life or has a horrible double meaning, I think you just have to nod and smile.

It could be worse, obviously the boy will have a lot of stick as he grows up, but it could be worse. (assuming they don't live anywhere near Preston).

Phew, at least it's not Kandy Rain. I honestly think (hope) as soon as you hold him you really won't be bothered by his name so you are being a little unreasonable. He's your nephew, nephews are brilliant.

About 12 years ago I worked at a nursery in Preston. The local football team being Preston North End. A boy attended whose name was Preston, his two middle names had the initials 'N' and 'E' and his surname was Rule. Preston Rule or if going by the initials PNE Rule

I shit you not

In terms of towns of Lancashire names, it's not too bad. She could've gone for Osbaldeston, Ramsbottom, Oswaldtwistle, or Clitheroe (terrible if shortened).
