AIBU?

WIBU..to go to this job interview knowing I can’t accept the job?

…If offered, obviously!

I FINALLY have an interview at my dream company. I have been applying for roles there for the last 2 or 3 years and have always been gutted as haven’t managed to get an interview.

Until now! I saw a job advertised a couple of weeks ago, it is a drop in ‘responsibility’ and I am slightly over-qualified so I knew it would probably be a pay decrease but applied anyway as you never know (salary wasn’t stated on advert, just said ‘dependant on experience.’)

I got a phone call last week to say I have an interview and that she would email me the details, great.

On the email it stated the salary and it is a 6k salary drop. I just cannot afford to take that sort of drop. However, I really would like to go to the interview so I can FINALLY get in front of these people and meet them. I’m hoping if they meet and like me, that they may keep me in mind if I apply for roles in future, or if a more ‘suitable’ role comes up?

WIBU to go, knowing that I can’t accept the position if offered to me? I know I’d be a ‘time waster’ but I don’t see how else I’m ever going to get an interview for this place!

Are you sure that's quite what you meant to say, Justaboy? Wink

I think that's probably not a bad result at all. As another poster said if they don't call you give them a genital reminder that your there:).

Very positive feedback and sounds like a decent company.

That's great news! I really hope something comes of it.

That sounds like the perfect outcome.

I'm glad you didn't decide to go with the advice of the HR posters. Every company is different, this one sounds like it would be a good employer

Thanks for the update! The outcome shows that you definitely did the right thing in going to the interview. Gratified to see that we have the right advice Smile
Now keep a very close eye out for future vacancies!

Great result! Fingers crossed they do have a role for you soon. Just a small piece of advice from when I was in a similar position.

If they do find you a role make sure you negotiate your true worth rather than being too grateful.

Well done, OP. You've made yourself known to them and, maybe I'm being naive, but I think the wording 'roles that may arise in the next few months' sounds very positive; much more so than saying 'roles that may arise in the future', which I think is a polite way of saying thanks but no thanks.

It sounds as though they are or know they may be recruiting soon, and that they hope they'll have a job for you.

I second the advice to drop them a catch-up line in a few months, too.

PausingFlatly · 26/10/2015 09:41

Oh fantastic.

I do hope something comes up.

If you don't hear from them, you could drop them a quick note in 6 or 9 months saying, "I just wanted to let you know I'm still available and interested", as a little prod.

So pleased you got that result. Fingers crossed that the right position comes up soon.

And thank you for updating - I'd lurked on this thread so was delighted to get an update. Wish more people would do that.

Let us know when they do offer you something.

Hello,

I thought I would quickly update everyone.

I received an email on Friday from the HR lady apologising for not getting in touch sooner, but saying that they were agonizing over the decision and had decided not to appoint me because they just didn’t feel the role was the right one for me.

She said that there was nothing more I could’ve done on the day, they were really impressed by me and thought I’d be an asset to the company, but not in that role.

She asked if she could keep my details on file as she would like to consider me for other roles that may arise in the next few months.

SO, kind of got the outcome I wanted!

Thanks everyone!

Coming to this a bit late, but I think you made the right decision to go. I work in a big organisation, and when we are recruiting, there is this constantly moving picture of other factors ongoing in the background that can impact on what happens after interviews. A role is identified and recruited for, but at the same time somebody else could hand in notice/announce pregnancy, somebody could be re-allocated internally, someone in a different bit of the company has an urgent need for additional support as well, a whole chunk of work could massively increase or decrease, responsibilities could move around teams, any number of things....and so if we interviewed great people who were clearly above or below the original role we had planned for, they would be in a really good position for when we started recruiting for any new roles.

I think - if i were you and it was offered I'd go and be rather business like and see if you can haggle the pay up a bit and then get in there and then see if you can go further.

If all else fails what are the prospects of going back to your existing job or getting another one like it with another company if you don't get any further after say 6 months or so?.

Report
lifesalongsong · 20/10/2015 13:48

Also, if you are offered it and want to turn it down they've given you the perfect reason by already saying that the role may not be enough for you so no need to mention the salary drop.

PeterParkerSays · 20/10/2015 13:47

Can you go away now and see if you can get the debts restructured so there are fewer payments each month or get them consolidated, to give you some wiggle room?

Report
lifesalongsong · 20/10/2015 13:46

That sounds like it worked out well, I'm glad you decided to go for the interview even if they don't offer you the job

Report
NameChange30 · 20/10/2015 13:27

Well done for going and doing well in the interview by the sounds of it! I think they were impressed by you, and if they don't offer it to you, it will probably be because they think you're too good for the role. This is the best possible outcome, I think, because it means they will bear you in mind for more senior roles if they come up in future. And if they do offer it to you, ask if there's any room for salary negotiation, and if there isn't, be honest when you decline - say you'd love to work for them but it's too big a pay cut, but you would love to be considered for other roles that come up in future, and you will apply again.

Report
OnlyLovers · 20/10/2015 13:24

Sounds very positive, OP! Good on you for going. It sounds as though you enjoyed it, which probably means they did too. Smile

Well, I did it!

Think it went well and I knew as soon as I walked in the doors that I would genuinely love to work there!

Everyone was really lovely and just the general ethos is great.

I answered all of the Q’s asked of me pretty confidently and they seemed pleased with the answers!

I think they have an inkling though as at one point the HR lady did say ‘I wouldn’t want you to feel unfilled by this role, it is varied, but not quite what you are doing now’

They stated the salary at the end and I just nodded.

I asked about progression within the role and they admitted that there wasn’t much scope for progression within the actual role, but obviously other opportunities could come up within the organisation.

I have honestly done the calculations 10 x over. I am not on an amazing salary to begin with (mid 20’s) and this would take me back to the teens. I really just can’t afford it. No children no, but debts unfortunately that need paying as well as general life/ bills and saving for a deposit for a mortgage!

So yeh, bit gutted as it just confirmed to me that I would really love to work there. Hopefully (lol) I won’t be offered it (because they know I would be a bit bored in the role) but I have done a good enough interview for them to keep me in mind for other roles in future, who knows! I’m glad I went though so thank you everyone for your advice and well wishes, much appreciated!
