AIBU?

neighbours offended that I suggested hiring a skip

My neighbours front garden is an eye saw, they habe a old kitchen unit next to the bin, an overgrown bush messy, grass that's barely cut twice a week. Some weeds poping up through the concrete.

I've joked many times about it but it really does bring the street down. Other day I suggested hiring a skip, since then they've ignored me. They are just being precious right?

Check your own perfect life before criticising others.
Maybe start with your grammar and spelling?

I had a car on my front garden for a while years and one on my drive. I'm sure it really pissed off the neighbours but they had the good grace not to mention it.

They did come out and watched them being taken away...and probably cheered

Our front garden isn't perfect by any means, but we have pulled out of a house purchase when we realised that the state of the NDN's garden was permanent. While some people are fine living next to chaos, I didn't want to invest in a house and improvements only to find that I couldn't recoup my investment if we had to sell and the neighbours put off potential buyers.

My back lawn is currently about a foot high. It is full of clover and other wild flowers (or weeds depending on your point of view). As I sit here all I can hear is the hum of dozens of bees flitting here and there along with clouds of damsel flies and other insects.
I've no doubt to the lawn Nazis it looks a mess. If you don't like it don't bloody look at it.

I will ask our NDN if he wants to use a skip we're getting because I know he's doing work on his house and will probably find it handy. But we'll be getting it for our own use anyway.

You are overstepping the mark. Offering to mow the grass would be much more neighbourly.

FFS I personally don't give a fuck about my front garden and only keep it up as its part of our tenancy agreement.

Not everyone gives a toss.

A skip on a drive may well only cost £85. If it goes on the road, you need a license from the council which is £100+ on top of the skip hire.

£220 inc VAT for a road skip is the norm round here, about £90 for a driveway one.

The OP has already said the "twice a week" was a typo and was supposed to say "twice a YEAR"! Hmm

Marr, are your neighbours struggling to cope? Maybe they have difficulty cutting the grass which is why it's done so rarely. A few weeds, an overgrown bush and one kitchen unit (how long has it been there?) wouldn't bother me too much. Is there a back story to this?

Do you have any stuff of your own that needs to go in a skip? Could you hire one for yourself then offer to put the offending kitchen unit in it?

Notgrumpyjustquiet · 04/07/2015 12:19

Are you for real?

You'd seriously go round and ask ALL the other neighbours to chip in for a skip to take one kitchen unit away..? That probably wouldn't make them feel completely ganged up on, would it, love? Christ, I'm glad you don't live anywhere near me because I would have been far ruder to you than they were about it.

The kitchen would be annoying, but the rest wouldnt be an issue for me.

I've just paid £270 for my skip Confused

OP I can't quite believe you called the power company to report an overgrown bush. That's incredibly busybody, plus electricity doesn't quite work like that

One of the good things about having council tenants as neighbours is the every so often the council remind you that you need to keep your front garden tidy as part of your tenancy.

The council will take all that for around £20.
Sometimes when you apply in a joky manner people won't think you are giving hints so just say it to them.
We had an old man who used to live next door, had a terrible overgrown garden but we cleared it out for him, sadly he passed shortly after.

Do you own the house in which your NDNs live? Do you pay their rent or mortgage? If as I suspect the answer is no, butt out and get on with your own life. I do not understand this obsession with other people's lives. How does any of this in any way impact on you? It doesn't so mind your own business.
