Autistic DD - emotional

DD 8 wanted to do something for her birthday. Like many autistic children, she is not great socially and she doesn't really have many if any real friends. I feared rejection for her so suggested a quiet family party for her but she said she wanted to invite school friends. With a heavy heart, I sent out 7 invitations to go bowling in 2 weeks time. I told DD not to worry if they couldn't come as we would have a nice day anyway. Yet fucking 5 out of the 7 have responded saying they want to come. I could cry (I have cried). 2 of the parents said their dd's were so excited to come and nagging their parents. DD is so happy. It may not seem much to most people but this is like winning the lottery to us. I have seen a lot of posts from parents of autistic children here recently scared for the future. I am scared too especially with the amount of people that believe 'in my day, there was not autism, just naughty children' bullshit but days like these are really great.

Opip my friend said that when her DD reached 8-9, she seemed to suddenly turn a corner socially despite her ASD...when she got an invitation to a party my friend almost passed out with excitement...her dd was all Hmm "chill Mummy!" Grin

Absolutley lovely.
My DS has just turned 8 and has ASD, but we do days out instead of party, but he got invited to a party last week for the first time in a few years, i think i was most excited than he was!

Happy birthday to her :)

How Awsome Smile, fantastic, I am so happy for your dd Grin.My dd 8 is Autistic, and has developmental delays, she is in SS so not been involved in any parties, she never really liked them. This year, she wanted one, at an art studio, I was stuck for friends, so invited some friend she used to know from MS, and friends children. I thought, no, they will not want to go to her party, but had all 9 replies back saying yes please to dd party Smile. I was so happy. I totally understand.

That's lovely - hope it goes really well!

Just a suggestion but would you feel comfortable texting parents a reminder 'x is so pleased x is coming to her party tomorrow. It means a lot as with her autism she sometimes finds friendships trickier than most. I'm sending everyone a reminder that the party is tomorrow as she'd be so upset if anyone forgot! Looking forward to seeing you'

Just in case any of your attendees are a bit flaky this should help stop no shows.

Have a wonderful time x

I'm so glad this is a happy ending. My DD is only 2 but I really hope that I can bring her up to be nice to others and accept party invitations happily. I've seen too many threads on hear from parents feeling sad about how their children are treated. Happy Birthday Little Miss Naughtylist,

That is such wonderful news. I know exactly how you feel. DS (nearly four) had his first play date today that wasn't a son/daughter of one of my friends, and it heartened me to see him having fun with kids from school.

The future is very bright for your daughter, I'm sure :)
