AIBU?

To think constant muttering is a bit off in an office?

My brand new colleague (started a week ago) mutters, sighs and speaks to herself the whole day long. She sits right next to me.

Is this normal or a bit crazy? It really pisses me off.

But I can't say anything really, can I?

^if I had to work in an office ever again I swear I would end up in prison

annoying, annoying bastards^

Yup. I can't fucking stand offices. I like to work in complete silence.

I have a colleague who is always at full-blast on the phone. I keep telling them to adjust the headset position and customers will hear them better, but after a few hours it starts up again. Another has a radio which is on at full volume if I don't get into the office first.

Tutting to yourself and random muttering is SO annoying I literally can't stand it. The office doesn't have to be silent but I don't see why people feel they have to fill every quiet moment. If someone was having a loud phone call next to me I would find it very difficult to concentrate as I have hearing problems. I wouldn't be able to carry out a conversation of my own.

The running commentary on what they're doing and tutting/complaining/singing reeks of self importance and 'ooh I'm so wacky'

Sorry but I hate it

If someone is talking loudly on their phone or muttering away, I can't work so I make a point of doing something else until they have finished. If you have some sort of disorder in which you cannot work without muttering, you should not work around other people as it is so distracting.

I much prefer noise in an office compared to the hateful quiet office I have to put up with.

If I'm going to stare at spreadsheets all day I need chat and noise around me. I lose concentration when it's quiet.

Just tell her. I have a tendency to mutter to myself whilst working and really appreciate being reminded that I need to shut the fuck up!

YANBU

It's massively annoying. I share an office with four others we talk but generally know when to shut up and due to the nature of our jobs are rarely all in the office at the same time.
Unfortunately, there is someone who needs to come in and out a lot and give a constant running commentary/talks to herself/mutters/sighs/hums/sings when she comes in - she is never quiet (people have had word with her but she doesn't seem to be able to control it/understand).
My productivity falls to about 50% or worse when she comes in. If I had to work with her all day long I really wouldn't be able to cope!
