To spend silly money on a Sleepyhead Grand Pod?

Dd is almost one, and she doesn't sleep through. I know this is normal, but I am very very tired and considering all options! When she wakes she's not usually hungry, more wanting comfort. When we bring her into our bed she snuggles up and sleeps, no problem.

I think the problem is that she wakes up in her big empty cot and feels sad and alone. According to the Internet, the answer is a Sleepyhead Grand Pod. Sadly the bloody things cost £150! Even I think that's a high price for sleep, and it might not even work.

Should I get one? Would rolled up towels work just as well? I live in hope that someone will want to sell me a barely used second hand one for £20 and am perusing the local baby pages on Facebook accordingly.

I too was appalled at the price and made my own from scratch for 12 week old DD - we used it for the first month or so and it worked like a dream, plus very satisfying I wasn't paying £150 for a decent nights sleep, but just co sleep now. I would happily have handed it over but your little person is probably far too big for it unless you have an extremely wee one!

What about a quilt rolled lengthways into a tube and then shaped round?

TBH tho, we have a co-sleeping 11.5 month old, and there's not a chance I'd fork out that sort of money on yet another bloody useless baby gimmick.

Babies aren't daft. If they want a cuddle from mummy, then they want a cuddle from mummy. It's easier just to give in and co-sleep IMO.

I think the cheaper version is the toddle pod, I've heard good things about them.

Dd is wedged snuggled down amid 2 pillowcases of rolled up towels. Fingers crossed...

You aren't meant to keep the cardboard in.

It says on the instructions to remove it straight away - the cardboard is only for transport before its used and shouldn't be in the sleepyhead when the baby is.

I also thought about encouraging her to get obsessed with particularly attached to a comforting toy or muslin or something.

I gave DS1 my satin nightie one night and it worked a treat, he absolutely loved it. I then cut it up into more manageable sizes, with the added bonus that we had lots of them and if we lost all of them then I could cut up another one - he didn't care if it was different just so long as it felt right and smelt right!

It doesn't have a cardboard bottom - it's very clear that you're meant to remove it!

In my humble opinion it is worth its weight in gold. It is the only thing on which my 9mo will sleep for longer than 20 minutes at a time. Having removed the cover several times for washing, it is all well made and doesn't feel cheap. Everything springs back into shape nicely.

Great invention I bought one for DS when on offer (DP nearly died at the cost) however it stopped him rolling into the bars while asleep and waking himself up

Yes my baby rolls into bars and I don't know if she's waking or that wakes her.
How old were yours when you started using the sleepyhead?

I'm a big fan, as a PP said the material doesn't feel cheap when cover come off - they spring back into shape well. I thought the reason it felt quite lightweight etc was because the point is it's all 'breathable' material. So if baby rolls up against it they don't smother?

*when covers come off
Sigh
wish could blame that on wine

You could always try it. If it doesn't work then you'd probably get a fair price for a barely used Sleepyhead Grande on eBay?

I am not a fan - made my own 6mo DS worse if anything.

However, we have since had success with putting him down in his front. It's likely that he had a touch of the refluxes and being pinned on his back was making his feel worse.

All in all I'm v glad I borrowed one to start.

What about giving her a duvet? My DSs sleep improved hugely when he swapped to a duvet. He loved snuggling up in it!

We've bought something similar for baby due in december, but it's obviously for a newborn and only suitable up to a certain age (they might have different sizes available?) but it's less than half the price of a sleepyhead. It's called a Purflo Nest

Buy buy buy buy it! solved my DD3 sleeping issues and age 2 still snuggles into it as does the 4yo so it lasts, but uses sheet to cover (a cot sheet stretches over it) as its a bugger to wash.

Wish I'd known on the first two!

Yep tried sleep on front.
And rolled up blanket cellular but they don't give the snugness

I have a breathing mat for her. The other thing that attracts me to sleepyhead is I may be able to have it in me and do a cot transfer.

If she's in my bed I can't transfer her often and my back hurts

5minutes the OP's DD will be 2.5 now...hopefully she gets some sleep now! (Although if she's like mine, I wouldn't be so sure...)

Why does it matter

Dd loved her sleepyhead so much that I bought the grand. Had to send it back as it was so big - honestly, it's enormous!!

Now she's in her own cot/room I might order another; anything to stop the constant thrashing and wailing as yet another limb gets smashed into the cot or stuck through the bars (I bought beautiful cot bumpers and then saw that the recommendation now is not to use them!).

I say get it if you think you need it :)

Could you do something with pool noodles under a fitted sheet?

I wish I'd known about the Purflo one. DS is 4 months now so think he might be too big now. I love their sleep suits, I have a couple but have no idea where the sleeves are!!

Report
firsttimemum15 · 21/10/2016 00:28

You can't find the sleeve on a sleepsuit?

I've read too they're bug someone mentioned too large to fit in bed and to a transfer. This is what I was hoping to do really. X
