AIBU?

To be laughing (almost) uncontrollably at the Gaston song?

I've let DDs open one of their presents early - they're both poorly with a cough/cold.

Anyway, its Beauty and the Beast, they've not seen it before, I haven't seen it since I was around 10.

Gaston is such an arsehole! The whole song, they're all singing about these "qualities" that make him such a desirable man Hmm and all I can think is "dickhead, bigger dickhead, even bigger dickhead" each time they come up with new reasons why he is so brilliant.

As for the "every last inch of me is covered with hair" I actually spat my tea out Grin My best friend is also pissing herself laughing.

I have been re watching B&TB lately with my DS (my god, what a great excuse to watch it over and over...I love it)

In my adult brain, Belle blatantly knows that the Beast is a Prince, and a spell needs to be broken.

Evidence:

  1. near the beginning, she says, about a book: "Well it's my favorite! Far off places, daring swordfights, magic spells, a prince in disguise!"

  2. She goes on to sing: "Oh! Isn't this amazing? It's my favorite because you'll see. Here's where she meets prince charming. But she won't discover that it's him till chapter three."

  3. She knows its an enchanted castle, she says so just before the "Be Our Guest" song. This ties in with all the fairy tale books she's been reading.

  4. When she goes snooping in the West Wing, she discovers a ripped old painting in his room, and she BLATANTLY knows its the Beast in his former self. She is already concocting her plan to transform him back to his former self, by getting him to fall in love with her, so she can fulfill her wish to leave her "provincial life", and cash in.

Then she acts all surprised when he transforms back into a (ugly, effeminate) Prince.

She's one clever bitch, is Belle.

There is a line in our version (very old)
No one "persecutes harmless crackpots like Gaston" or something like that - is it still there or have more recent PC versions cut it?

B&b is my top disney fave, is it weird that for me beast as beast would get it? not gaston or post beast???? certainly every last inch of him is covered in hair! (went to disneyworld this year but didnt get to try the grey stuff, presumably its delicious.)

Oh yes, Flinn Ryder is definitely hot. Especially since he's voiced by Zachary Levi (Chuck), who is pure gorgeousness since he grew a beard.

Prince Valiant is my favourite.

Flynn Rider & Prince Eric are by far the hottest Disney Princes ... Ooo Flynn Rider

Disney Aladdin would be dead gorgeous if he was real.

My top 5: Hercules, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Robin Hood and Tangled.

Also, your DD sounds awesome Stocking, I snorted at "I'm going out of the room, I don't want to look at Gaston, he's an idiot". You've obviously raised her right!

Hercules is in my Top 5, I love Meg. Swimming through a sea of souls slowly dying to get her back

The Princes don't usually do much (Cinderella, for example) So I love B&B, Hercules, Aladdin - although DH & I sat tearing that to shreds the other day when the DDs were watching it. we need to get a life

Nothing has made me howl with laughter as much as B&B though, not even close. Much of that is at how stupid Gaston is. And the villagers in the town. Woman reading a book?! How very dare she! Shock

I love the film for that song. Very ahead of it's time really how Belle rejects the traditional "provider" and hunk for the soft hearted but ugly one. It is an hilarious song, I do like a man covered in hair.

I always thought that was part of the 'joke' of the song though; that all of the qualities mentioned are questionable/dubious.

He's a bit like a stereotypical jock character I would say. Total knobhead but is known as an alpha male to all the blokes in the village because of his athleticism/ hunting prowress and the stereotypical ditsy women all fancy him.

10 points for Gaston!

0 points for human Beast. He is not hot.

It's my favourite Disney film after Hercules.

Belle was my favourite as a child, I thought the most romantic thing I'd ever seen was when the Beast gives her the Library.

Gaston would get it if he could shut his vile mouth for more than a second but I imagine he'd either be into BDSM or the sex would be beyond boring cos yer know, he doesn't seem to actually like women very much.

DD was very Shock "Why is Beast dead? I thought Disney always had a happy ending?" then burst into tears! Cheered up when the magic started happening but said to me deadpan when he'd transformed "Oh. I didn't think he'd look like that. He looks like Hercules, yack."

I think he's one of the hotter Disney Princes.

Maybe your dh should start eating dozens of eggs everyday? I love that song. And film.

Oh I adore Gaston! 'the hair over every inch of my body' line always makes me giggle.

I generally hate Disney songs but that one gets my seal of approval.

So uncanny that I'm watching that very scene with dd as I open mumsnet??

He uses antlers in all of his decorating too!

I love it when Belle says "Why Gaston, you are positively primeval!" and he answers "Why thank you Belle!"

I love B and the B. The songs are FABULOUS! And the heroine has a lot more get up and go than most Disney princesses. My DD1 was obsessed with aged 3 or 4

Me too GawjusHun the Beast looks like a girl, Gastons a prick but he'd definitely get it

Not in the song, but he does say of women "when they start reading books, and thinking...." and other blokes murmur agreement! I used to love it!

Especially when you also consider, "nobody, fights, bites and hits like Gaston" what a prince!
