What happened to the Bedruthan Steps thread?

Last week there was a thread started by someone having a rubbish time at Bedruthan Steps. The hotel manager finally became aware of the thread. Was the thread deleted?

OP posts:

Oops, I didn't read the thread and see that was discussed. She's genuine - I 'know' her from other forums.

Someone else I 'know' got banned from Mumsnet for telling the truth about being at the hotel at the same time as the OP.

Oh get real about trip advisor. I've just checked it. www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g528856-d279581-Reviews-Bedruthan_Hotel_Spa-Mawgan_Porth_Cornwall_England.html
It gets 84% and a tripadvisor certificate of excellence. It's clearly not a pit.

I missed the other thread but I've been to the hotel several times over the last ten years, at various stages of redevelopment. Yes, it looks rank from the beach - but when it was built it was All Terribly Modern. Inside it's very welcoming.

My kids are probably too old for it now, and I'm not sure we'll go again (I have lustings over Watergate Bay), but we have probably had about seven or eight three/four/five night stays there. Initially the food was a bit rubbish, but we had a non-sleeping baby (who turned out to be autistic) so never got to go out. The food is hugely improved these days.

The staff are lovely. Nothing has ever been too much trouble. They make huge efforts to reduce their impact on the environment despite the ageing building. They have loads of environmental awards. For me that's a big consideration.

No hotel is ever perfect. Amongst the vast numbers of people who stay there, some will have a bum deal. That's inevitable. To write off a whole hotel (or anything) because one person posted about a bad experience is a bit odd, IMO.

I have very complex dietary requirements (sadly), as does one of my children and they have catered for us with thought and kindness. I've stayed over thirty nights in this hotel and never been fed the wrong food. I've spent three nights at the far more expensive Polurrian Bay hotel and they struggled with my needs, but I wouldn't post on Mumsnet or TripAdvisor to say they were wankers. It was lovely but too expensive ;). Yes, if I went there again I would explain my requirements in advance far more clearly, and explain what was needed

I don't go there to be the height of fashion. I go there to relax and feel comfortable and they've offered that to me and my family. And yes, I've heard many residents treating staff like shit when I've been there. There are some very entitled rude people out there, you know. And many of them are on mumsnet!

It's not a super glamorous hotel but it's very comfortable, very relaxing and the staff are great.

The Wicker Man from 1973 horror film with Edward Woodward where he goes to remote Scottish Island and finds they are all inbred loons who 'do in' anyone who is 'different'.... Grin

I know, as I personally live in my own 'Wicker Man' land atm....

Ages ago I started a thread about an awful overpriced hotel with pretty nasty owners and named the hotel. Then the owners came on and made some untrue comments and loads of "posters" came onto the thread with gushing posts about how they had stayed there and how great it was. In the end I asked MNHQ to pull it because it was so nasty and MNHQ say ignore it but at my request they did pull it!

I don't think a site such as MN could have a long-running, disparaging thread constantly in active convos about an advertising partner- it's not good business, surely? And MN do need a revenue stream to keep going

Maybe MN need to review its partners. Many many posters came forward and told of awful experiences.

As did many locals.

Who needs who more? A massive site like MN where companies should be begging to advertise or little Bedruthin Wicker Hotel?

Look at the pics on Tripadvisor particularly the "overhyped and not value for money" poster. Now tell me how those rooms are better than Premier Inn.And as for the breeze block 60s forces quarters "apartments" just who would pay those prices to stay there?Shock

Seriously you could stay in a gorgeous cottage for a week for the same price as 2 nights in that hotel.

I don't think Bedruthan came out of it AT ALL well, so,

despite the Wicker men/women

at least some of us having read it would now choose not to stay there.

Just looked at their website. Sunloungers appear to be a bit OTT. Looks like it would attract show offs?

Stalker OP was quite insistent that Filly ordered a meat meal despite her being vegetarian and referred to overheard conversations.

It was nasty and smacked of retribution fron Cornwall although stalker OP had a previous weird thread unrelated to this one.

All odd and HQ didn't help either.

"I wonder if it was the personal turn or the fact bedrthuin advertise on here and were unhappy?"

I wondered that too, Knitted.

I read almost to the end and it certainly seemed that MN had allowed all the personal stuff to run for a long time, and not really done a lot about that, despite OP being almost outed by that point.

That certainly made me wonder if it were concerns for the Bedruthan Steps and their advertising, rather than concerns for the OP or the strange personal turn, that led to the thread's deletion.

I hope not.

No idea what the wicker friends bit was- I hadn't got that far.
Tomato sorbet sounds pretty nice though!

I agree MN should be impartial about advertisers in that sense... but surely a company should not accept advertising from companies they don't approve of? (and I know for a fact that MN do not, nestle for example)

I am fairly sure that the reviews in the MN Review section will be posted by MNers, and not tampered with, but I don't think a site such as MN could have a long-running, disparaging thread constantly in active convos about an advertising partner- it's not good business, surely? And MN do need a revenue stream to keep going.

Yes the food poisoning references were a bit of a worry. Also the weird stalker got really personal. MNHQ should not have deleted the thread IMHO, just deleted the weirdo poster.

Me too, quite frankly I was shocked at some of the pics linked to.No way would I pay that kind of money for hot rooms smaller than a Premier Inn family room.

Surely MN should be impartial as regards advertising.

I think there was one obvious hotel employee, who only posted once or twice.

Someone made a quip about the Friends which later posters got over excited about, Salem-style (which is ironic).

I had also imagined that the hotel probably requested that it be pulled!

Yes after The Wickers piling in failed to turn it round.

Well- it's hardly nice to give your paying advertisers bad publicity, is it?

well maybe they should be advertising somewhere that seems to give its customers serious food poisoning and a miserable time and does not address issues?

Mums need a welll earned rest on holidays not confined to small pokey rooms with no shower and no breakfasts for a large sum of money.

Its a public forum.

Op arrived at hotel after having a lovely self catering holiday, to two disappointing, overpriced, adjoining rooms with a malfunctioning door betwixt them.

Someone came on claiming to have overheard a woman - who may or may not have been the op - being obnoxious to waitstaff about some (admittedly substandard) tomato sorbet.

Op stated that only the waitress or the couple sitting next to them could have known, then stated that that statement was clearly in jest.

Discussion about vegetarianism and stalking ensued.

Thread pulled.

Well that's my summary,
anyway.
