On the day.

Especially if there's the possibility of money/vouchers in them (and there often is with family ones).

It's much nicer having a pile of cards than opening them early in ones or twos.

On the day. I always write not to be opened until the birthday on the envelope if I send a card too.

Saved for the day, and opened first before any presents. And if there's a card and present from someone you open the card first. Otherwise you haven't been dragged up right and it shows you don't care as much about the card as you do about the present. Which is TORTURE when you're a child!

Christmas cards opened as they come otherwise you'd spend all day opening cards!

Birthday cards opened on birthday itself though I am wondering if those who open as they arrive receive more cards in general.

DH says its really bad luck to open cards before. We never did but he is adamant about it.

Wouldn't occur to me to open a birthday card on a day that isn't my birthday.

Definitely save birthday cards until the actual day. Christmas cards as they arrive.

We now have a particular birthday door in the living room where all of the birthday cards get blu-tacked up for a week or so until we can be bothered to take them down to get full value from them. :)

On the day. That makes it all 5 cards then.

I open my own as they come, but weirdly squirrel away the children's until the day. Bit more of a fuss when they come down to cards and presents on their birthday morning.

In our house, birthday cards are kept to open on the actual birthday.

Christmas cards are opened when they arrive.

On the day. I like birthdays to be a special day and not diluted by opening before hand. This even more so with DD's birthday as hers often contain money.

On the day - kids don't get much for their birthdays - a present from DH and I, and maybe 3 cards from granny/uncles or aunts if they remember.

Open on the day or if there's quite a few then open a few before bed the night before and rest throughout the birth day and birth evening!
