to be annoyed by this?

I am a nanny.
Today when I arrived at work both the children's playroom AND bedrooms were an absolute tip. Think every single book and toy out, milk in the play sink etc. I have just tidied up the playroom (took 2 hours) and bedrooms are next, im expecting the tidy up will be another 2 hours. Both of my charges are at school so it's not so bad that I am having to keep a little one in whilst I do it.

There was also 4 massive loads of washing to do. The washing I hung up Friday afternoon was still there so I am certain none was done all weekend. I have washed all the laundry and sorted through what is priority to hang dry. one of the children had wet the bed either last night or sat night, I am unclear when BUT the wet bed stuff was put in the laundry basket with everything else so I thought it was best I made sure to wash everything today as it was starting to smell. I made the decision to tumble dry sheets/bedding, towels and children's pants/vests/socks as there was NO room to hang everything and its wet outside.

My boss has just left for work after working from home this morning and sent me a text saying could I please not use the tumble dryer and to make sure the bedrooms are tidy because in a few hours it will be pick up time from school and then I won't have time to do then. Angry I am really annoyed! I know how to do my job. if they had done some washing over the weekend and NOT put wet wee sheets into the laundry basket I could have washed this over 2 days. Also the way the playroom and bedrooms were left this morning was ridiculous and I was hoping after and initial tidy up by me the children would help tidy the bedrooms after school (ages 6 and 4, and by help I mean easy things such as books back on the bookshelf etc.)

I really want to text back that I think its ridiculous that I cant tumble dry considering how much laundry was left! but obviously dont want to as its a one off and usually not like this.
just needed a little vent.

I agree it sounds very plausible (I wouldn't be surprised to find similar in my house if I'd been away for the weekend and left dh with the dc - except he would leave the wet sheets in the bath…). I'm pleased your boss realised you had extra work to do and showed her appreciation!

Ahh she sounds nice. Nannying sounds hard work. Your description sounds like my house some Mondays but its ME who sorts it out and my minions two eldest do their own rooms (sort of). Tbh I'm a Sahm with 3 of my 4 at school. My 1 year old is currently easy peasy so I can do have breaks. most of today

Glad she realised you had gone above and beyond and flowers in a nice gesture and apology.
Fingers crossed it doesn't happen again.

That was a good update from your MissMooMoo - were the chocolates nice?

Chippednailvarnish · 11/11/2013 21:10

That sounds fair, as long as it doesn't happen again!

Unfortunately that sounds highly plausible Hmm which ought to mean there won't be a repeat any time soon.

Glad things have been cleared up.

Heartbrokenmum73
This is all fairly new part of my job as until 6 weeks ago when their youngest child started going to school full time I was with 1 child at all times, I don't live in the area so yes I stay because I have to be around if one of the children has an emergency at school or becomes unwell, I am basically paid to be on call. I am actually leaving after Christmas as I said I'd give it a go but it is so boring being home alone all day.....I am paid well, more than the average British salary.

Back to what she said. She seemed confused so I txt her back to say there was an awful lot of laundry to do and that there was a ton of tidying. She then told me someone in her family was taken ill friday night and she was away from sat morning until late last night and she had not been down in the basement but her husband had been home with the children all weekend. She was SO embarrassed and came home with a bunch of flowers and a box of chocolates for me and assured me that it will not happen again

Just out of curiosity (honestly, I really don't understand), if you're the nanny and the kids are at school why are you expected to be at the house at all during the day?

I have no experience of nannies so I don't know the deal, and assume it's different in every situation. I just don't understand why you have to be there if the kids aren't?

Is part of your job to clean up after them when they're not there? That sounds shit - I hope you're well paid OP!

I'm sitting at work at my desk in the office MNing working Wink. I feel for the OP. Think they are expecting to much. These people think its fine to dump all this shit on to her when they can't clearly even be bothered to put a pissy sheet in the machine themselves
Some people..........Hmm

So both children are school age and neither you nor their parents have instilled in them any requirement to clear up after themselves at the end of the day? ....
That point aside [so I would most definitely be taking them to task after school and not touching it until then]; I don't think it is acceptable to leave the place like a pigsty but you do say, it's a one off. Irritating as hell but a one off. Maybe ask what happened yesterday pm? Perhaps they had a houseful of guests with children who didn't bugger off until late.

The text is quite frankly passive aggressive. She couldn't be arsed to do it all herself but dislikes your methods of dealing with a mountain of washing in the most expedient way. I'd tell her to get stuffed myself, or reciprocate in kind and drape every door and radiator in the house with wet washing...

YANBU. That's not even light housework, did something happen over the weekend?

missponty: You really have no clue about nannying do you? And that was your choice not to take breaks that you were entitled to have, we don't actually get breaks as a nanny...

Yes Op, if its unusual for them to do this speak with them....just gross them leaving the dirty bed clothes and a huge mess for you without an explanation!

MissPontypine everyone is entitled to a break.

Report
MissMooMoo · 11/11/2013 12:21

I should have added they have a cleaner who comes 1x a week to do ironing and 1x a week to do cleaning.

when I started the job it was very full on with 2 young children at home. younger child is now at school so it is a very different job and I am leaving after Christmas (my decision not theirs)
have txt back that they seemed to have had a busy weekend and there was quite a lot of laundry to get through and that I had no choice but to tumble dry the bedding and towels.

I'm on maternity leave at the moment, but I have worked, mostly in fairly demanding jobs where I would be lucky to get a 20 minute break to grab some lunch, I was allowed more breaks but I loved my job so I didn't mind tge extra work.
