I've been reading the 2 asian guys chased me thread and I'm a bit confused.

If someone said to you 'white bitch' would you think that was a racial slur?

I wouldn't ..I'd just think they were arseholes

I'd be more concerned about the 'bitch' bit

Yes i would. Why are they pointing out that im white?because theyre noting that i differ to them.If I called someone a bitch I wouldnt say you green bitch or whatever, its like someone identifying that youre a worse kind of bitch to them because you arent the same race or colour

Totally racist.

Why do you think there is one rule for one group and another rule for another?

That is patronising and morally relativistic.

This is one of the more batshit crazy threads I have been on in a while.

Curlew,Thants and others who are claiming that it is not racist as the person being insulted was white is just plain stupid and pretty ignorant.

If I walk down a road and am called a "black bitch" (as has happened on a few occasions) then it is most certainly a racist insult. Im pretty sure there is no disagreement there. So why when the people calling a white woman a "white bitch" for the purpose of causing offence and intimidation based on her skin colour is it no longer a racist act?

I have family members who wont talk to me or my DH for the simple fact that he is white and I dared to marry him. Are they any less racist than a member of his family who wont talk to us because he married a black woman? Some of the biggest an most vitriolic racists I know are from my own supposed community. It really dosen't matter what skin colour or racial background someone comes from they are perfectly capable of being racist to anyone of a different background.

Yabu op.

It is racist.

I've been called a white bitch once, walking to the shop on the street I live on. Large group of teenage boys (Somalian/Somalian decent I think) hanging around (minding their own business as far as I could see, just lots of them) and two police officers eying them from the other side of the road. Got "fuck off you white bitch" spat at me by one of them. I was shocked at the time, said nothing and carried on walking.

In hindsight I think the boy in question was just feeling angry and I was in the way. It doesn't make it right or not racist but having two white police officers essentially creating a stand off for no reason had understandably got some backs up.

If "it's the thought that counts" then "black/white bitch" are racist on those grounds alone.

Nothing prefacing bitch, etc is there descriptively. The word, whether it's white, black, fat, four-eyed, is being included so that the speaker can tell you why s/he thinks you are a bitch!

If the victim feels unaffected by it, and says to herself, "meh, I am" that's great for her, but it does not excuse the intentions of the person yelling verbal abuse.

I wouod find it racist, and it would qualify as a racist insult for criminal purposes.
However, if someone called me 'a lesbian bitch' (not had this, but have had 'fucking dyke' a couple of times), then I would be more hurt by this because of the history of oppression and prejudice. There is more associated with being gay than white.
Had to report a homophobic attack once (followed in a car, driven off road, threatened) and the police officers who attended didn't get why 'fucking dyke' was upsetting and the police wrote off the offence as 'he wouldn't have known the couple was gay - no further action'. Completely wrong legally (let alone morally) too.

That wasn't the original thread hakuna - the thread that prompted this one was a few days ago now and featured the OP being called a white bitch as part of a road rage incident.

In the original thread, the OP of that thread was called a Black bitch, she was upset and posted on mumsnet. I really doubt there was any positive in what was said. The person said it as a negative and as an insult. Being Black is still seen as a negative in society.

"being white has never held me back and i have not been judged or expected to act a certain way because of my colour, it is never an issue
I just dont get why people get so offended when someone calls them a black... or a indian.... etc - if you are black or indian then what is the problem? - apart from obviously the bitch/slut/ twat insult that came after. "

If a person uses an aspect of that person that is different to them, Gender, colour, religion, then it is usually because the aggressor has stereotyped that aspect and has justified their negative attitude, or wrong/aggressive/abusive behaviour towards all people with this.

I am in my 40's, there were areas of the world that as a white woman you could go alone, without the real threat of being raped and no-one coming to help, I have known instances of my friends being dragged off the street in Greece and Turkey and raped, whilst every local ignored this (this was in the 80's).

The attitude by some men that White (or Black) girls are just for fucking, still exists. This was because it was thought that all white women went in holiday to find sex and as we were happy to have sex outside if marriage, how date we get to deny some men.

The attitude that all Muslims are fair game for violent acts exists, as another example, but it could be the football shirt that you are wearing.

You are in greater danger if you are reduced to the colour if your skin etc, for example.

There have been experiments done that have proven that we lose Empathy if we assume that a person has a trait that we are biased against and we become capable of behaviour that wouldn't be usual for us, usually more violent/ nastier etc.

It is important not to reduce fellow Human Beings into categories, as is done during Slavery, Holocausts, Exploitation situations etc. Africa and it's people seems so far removed from "us" that we blank out them starving to death, yet build Museums about Hitlers Death Camps, for example. We do this daily as Humans.
All Governments use this ability to bring in their policies.

If DC announced that 30% of the population will have benefit rights removed, we would question it, but categorise that into "under 25's" and it will slip through.

OP, I am speechless if you can't see why a white woman being called 'white bitch' is in no way equivalent to a black women being called 'black bitch'. Bloody hell Biscuit

(Haven't read all 8 pages, so this may already have been covered)

Of course it's racist (as well as sexist) because the person using the phrase is insulting you on the basis of your race. To pretend otherwise is to take mental gymnastics to an extreme.

It's like saying women can't be sexist because the power dynamics have historically been with men. But of course women can be sexist.

Chibbs, monkey has been used as a racist insult for black people by white people for years. It is irrelevant that black people do not look like monkeys, it is used in a derogatory way to say that black people are less evolved and is definitely racist.

Report
Chibbs · 04/10/2013 19:45

yes jamie, they have never been used as a racist slur because it would be rediculous! - if people didnt take offence/ think of monkey as a racist word then it wouldnt be!

you know for fucks sake i dont look like a fish so someone calling me a fish wouldnt offend, so if the players dont think they look like monkeys why do they take offence- if they didnt take offence then there wouldnt be the insult!

But no-one has ever used fish or aardvark as a racist slur, whereas monkey has been used, including bananas being horwn onto the pitch at black players.

"All this its ok to be racist to whites because they deserve it after slavery etc is fucking scary."

Please could you point out where someone has said that?

Report
KatyTheCleaningLady · 04/10/2013 10:40

To say "three black men boarded the bus" is not racist.

To say "three niggers boarded the bus" is racist.

However, when you combine "black" with other derogatory words, it becomes part of the insult, the racist part of it.

If someone says "You dumb black bitch" there is no doubt that "black" is one of the things the speaker doesn't like about the object of their scorn.

Theres no doubt the Asian men MEANT it as racist.
However its down to each individual person how they take it.
I just think people insinuating racism to whites is less serious than racism to blacks is very very dangerous.

Why mention skin colour at all if its not necessary?

To us it as an adjective in the context of an insult makes the insult racist.

Report
liquidstate · 03/10/2013 21:59

Is this a good time to mention the white slave trade?

(Disclaimer - am in no way suggesting it was as extensive as the slave trade in the Indies and Caribbean, however it did happen )

IMO 'white' is not an insult, 'bitch' is an insult, 'white bitch' is a racial insult.

Bazoo23 · 03/10/2013 21:57

Because I am white.
And people are black.

What is the problem? Paki/Nigger = Racist. But black or white I just dont see the issue.
