To expect a hospital not to allow strangers onto the ward in the middle of the night to go on a stealing spree? Recently happened to a relative of mine. The thing is you have to be buzzed in by staff to get onto ward - so someone must be responsible! Relative had laptop stolen. Apparently hospital takes no responsibility. Last thing he needed. So annoyed with the hospital.

He said he had to sign a disclaimer against any losses but I think this cannot be right. I agree Raum - it is a security breach. I think I'll write to the chief exec. thanks.

Raise it with the chairman not ward staff or management, what everyone seems to be missing is this is a major breach of security which could have endangered patients or staff. Imagine if this was a female ward or children only one..

At my nhs board this would be considered utterly unacceptable and head would most likely roll.

Your relative would have been told about valubles and given an option to have them placed away securely where staff wud have taken responsibility if stolen.

Most hospitals have signs everywhere saying don't bring valuables in. Someone could have held the door open for him? He could have been a relative?

At my hospital you are told not to bring anything valuable with you (I sleep with phone under sheets and bring minimal cash) for precisely that reason.

A ward should be a safe place; equally the thief could have been a legitimate visitor.

CCTV showed the man coming in, looking around, grabbing laptop and making a hasty exit.
