AIBU?

To be utterly utterly bored with vintage shabby chic cath kidston letters on the wall boringness...

3 friends at lunch all had Cath Kidston handbags with matching purses. We passed at least 4 shabby chic shops all replete with spotty tablecloths, rose print cases and wooden letters spelling out "home" "love" "wow" (thanks Kirsty).

It's IMPOSSIBLE to find cheap secondhand furniture (because I am poor) because its all been bought by people sanding, throwing on a coat of Farrow and Ball, artfully sanding it down again and flogging a chair for £200.

I've been on TWO vintage glam hen dos this year.

I'm sick of fucking cupcakes on flowery cardboard cake tiers.

Please tell me I'm not BU. it's the new twigs in cases isn't it?

You can get the Marthe Armitage paper here.

Personally, I am completely gone on the Fenching Blue in her sitting room! I even went to get a sample in Ressource (French distributor) last week and am thinking of having my kitchen painted in it.

Love that house Bonsoir linked to Envy

If I tried that I think I'd end up with something resembling Steptoe & Son's house. Maybe that's why I like CK - she makes it easy for me to add little bits of pattern and colour without having to be too brave even though thousands of other people have exactly the same

When are you planning on redecorating your DD's bedroom, LaQueen? Is it actually time to start sourcing ? [excited]

I think if you are not confident with pattern and colour and you have a plain simple elegant house you should be restrained and when you see something you truly love(like that paper) that really moves you it will work. Randomly buying 'bits' in the hope it will work never does!

I am aware I sound an utter tosser here but I am mid big job and am immersed in this stuff atm Smile Am happy to be told to shut up

It is certainly easier to mostly go for plain fabrics and walls.

I recently redecorated my DD's bedroom. There are several colours in there, but the only pattern is her duvet cover and pillow case. She has lots of "bits and pieces", as girls do, some of which are very pretty, and they are set off better by plain colours.

I think with colour and pattern you need to be unapologetic and just go for it.One big statement can look amazing and a fully papered room is lovely

Have any of you seen the 'fuck your noguchi coffee table' blog (or tumblr or whatever). Seems like there is little originality anywhere.

Everything is so marketed and visible (pinterest etc) - I wonder if it's actually possible to have an individual sense of taste.

I think you can choose things you like at random that refelct you and hope for the best. But the beauty and individuality of a house for me is always in the bones of it and the light

I'm a bit sick of the whole thing too, although I like cupcakes.

So what do we think is next? What's the next big thing for interiors and (sorry, dread word) 'lifestyle'? Is it ironic 70s? Modernist cool? Futuristic?

I think whatever comes next on the high st will inevitably be over done and then everyone will hate it!

Shut up noddy

Happy now? Grin

(But not until you've told me whether I can get away with a wall completely papered in one of those 'scenes' like a waterfall or something)

This is a very interesting (and also gratifying) thread.

Someone lent me a copy of this month's Country Homes & Interiors and I was amazed at how shabby chic and twee everything in it was. I honestly though all the interiors magazines had moved on from that look now. There was an article about combining polka dots with florals, FFS!

To be honest I'd thought it was just an interiors magazine to begin with - hadn't realised it was specifically country - so was expecting something a bit more eclectic/modern/unusual. Anyhoodle, I begin to see why the "French Country Shabby Chic" shops continue to abound in our town - I'm always amazed they make any money but now I start to see why!

And lastly, OMG, words on walls.....this trend makes me very stabby. My husband is a woodworker and I nearly manged to persuade him to make a wooden FUCK for a recent wedding gift, but we chickened out and bought on-list...a friend of mine has "BATHE" above her bath and it makes me want to hurl it through the bathroom window every time I'm in there. BATHE. As if you might forget why you ran a goddam bath.

I love Scandi retro, which unfortunately means it must be going to zoom to saturation in about 12-18 months.

I'm also keen on 70s brown stuff, like my fab tiled coffee table. I reckon that will be getting more popular soon.

DH is the king of bland (floorboards, pale walls and shutters), so our house is a constant battleground...

'70s brown stuff'. Grin Can't wait for that trend. I quite like a bit of brown and orange too, it has to be said.
