AIBU?

To point out that the Daily Fail is only looking for site hits?

They've published a goady article. When many MNers are boycotting the site for it's vile coverage of the Philpott verdict, so people are posting fewer links to their site and generally avoiding it.

They're trying to get hits to keep their advertisers happy. Please don't feed the troll.

I won't be buying it again after overdosing on their reporting of thatcher.

16 pages on Tuesday before any decent news!

it's there Kim but it's not what people look at - the celeb stuff gets 25 times the hits of the news content

"I suppose how you define news." Well, yes. A pretty loose definition I'd say Grin

KIm - you can see that from whatever the lead stories are on the main page - they are bumped according to hit.

As you don't click on it (!) I can tell you that today it's

drama teacher who sparked Maggie protest
women who can/can't fit into wedding dress
world's richest celebs
girl who became hooker to fund booze habit

YANBU it is unbelievable tripe that pretends that it's cuddly and 'woman friendly' intelligent etc. I don't click on it we don't actually BUY it either.

"If every single person on MN stopped clicking it would barely make a dent...honestly."

If everyone took that attitude, nothing would change ever.

Consumers can and do make a difference with campaigns / voting with their feet / wallets.

It's just like voting! Do you tell mumsnetters not to vote at elections as it won't make a difference?

The Daily Mail have expertly widened their readership to people who wouldn't contemplate giving the bastards money by buying the paper (Guardian readers - myself included - and the like) but even so they still click on links as curiosity / outrage gets the better of them.

I used to. No more!

IIRC they are now the largest news site in the world. Shameful Sad

Speak for yourself Holly. I avoid the Fail because I don't want to raise revenue for them through clicking on their links. they produce such a load of old shonk anyway, why would anyone want to read it? each to their own, I suppose Smile

yanbu.

I stopped for good last year. Took a few months of weaning myself off the DM online but I think I'm clean now Grin.

Although I might need some moral support when the West / Kardashian and The Cambridges' babies are born...... I'll be twitching to have a peek at the sleb news.

Ergo SOME people must be reading it , not necessarily MOST mumsnetters. That's a big leap you're making there.

If you are on firefox and want to avoid accidentally clicking on DM links, I can recommend this add-on, which shows pictures of tea and kittens instead of the link. :)

"FWIW it not a revenue by clicks, the DM gets its revenue by advertising so whether they get one click or 10 million, they still get the revenue."

Um, this is a basic fail in how internet advertising works I'm afraid.

It's all to do with hits!

In general, advertisers typically get offered rates based on CPC (cost per click) or CPM (cost per mille (thousand) impressions). Alternatively they might pay a flat rate to advertise, but that rate will be based on traffic.

The OP is 100% right IMO. The DM's business model is based on being an internet troll!

Don't feed the troll!

I removed the App from my phone in the wake of the Phillpott article and now use SkyNews App.

The other thing is that they can tell where the reader has clicked from so any change in traffic from mumsnet, if signficant, will be noted. Even if it doesn't affect their revenue or they don't give a shit, mumsnet will have made its feelings clear.

I never really took much notice of the DM until I joined MN and there was so much uproar about certain articles. Now and again I would click on a link to see what it was about but apart from that I would ignore the site. Then today when I realised I had been mentioned in a ridiculous article attacking MN I was gobsmacked!

Now I can see why it has such a bad reputation Grin

chicaguapa · 11/04/2013 13:14

I sincerely the few MN-ers who are apparently boycotting the DM will make any difference to their overall hit factor

Good grief! If everyone thought that, nothing would ever happen. I'm a firm believer in voting with your feet (or mouse). If you don't agree with something, boycott it, or nothing's every going to change.

FWIW it not a revenue by clicks, the DM gets its revenue by advertising so whether they get one click or 10 million, they still get the revenue.

The number of hits the website gets will be a factor in deciding whether an advertiser choses to advertise on their website surely? And the amount the DM can charge for that advert?

I haven't clicked on a link for a week now, I think. I used to avoid it mostly before, but sometimes I would skip up because I'd think, "well, what good is it doing". I'm not slipping up any more, because obviously enough of us are boycotting that it's affecting them! There is definitely a point now.

All you see on an iPad, if someone knows how to link properly so the address isn't visible, is the word highlighted. Here. Google BTW.

I don't read it but I clicked accidentally because someone's started a thread because they were named (poster name) in the article. You can't hover and see what the link is before clicking on an iPad. There's also at least one other thread about details from the same article.

Because that is the most linked site, ergo people must be reading it to link to it.

This is followed by the mock outrage that they have inadvertently clicked the link, which clearly exhibits 'DM' in the link.

It's like groundhog day in here at times.

I sincerely the few MN-ers who are apparently boycotting the DM will make any difference to their overall hit factor. FWIW it not a revenue by clicks, the DM gets its revenue by advertising so whether they get one click or 10 million, they still get the revenue.

So boycott away, you aren't denting the pockets of their shareholders at all. With it's American site, the UK will become small fry.
