AIBU to really dislike the fact that almost everyone now uses 'it's like' or 'it was like', instead of 'it's as if, or 'it's as though"? Are we all too lazy to 'speak proper' any more??

It's just like... A place holder... But less annoying than 'ummm' or 'ermmmm'

Oh yes, three dots, tis the law...

Oh and yes, I have a languages degree from a top uni and all that and still say "like" too. Grin

I say it constantly.

AND I say "and then I was like "what?" and she was like "no way" and I was like "it's like you don't, like, understand.""

AND part of my degree was linguistics.

So I give you a great big thumbs down.

Hunners of dots instead of three upset me more...

I meant the first it's about to be in bold, but messed it up.

I work with young people and have two teenagers, and I've got used to it now.

What I hate more is people who should know better (MPs who have been to Eton, fgs), who say, "It's about making work pay and rewarding hard working families."

Surely only something like a story or a news article can be about something? Does that make sense?

Adding "like" into every sentence is, sortoflike, a West Country/Bath/Brizzle thing, int it, like?

And then I like turned round and said...

It's like people are spinning, these days. Like, what's going on?

A simile is a comparison using "like" or "as". Sticking "like" on the end of sentences as a qualifier is grammatically incorrect and a little annoying, but similes are valid sub-categories of metaphor, and for that reason YABU.

It's like, everything's like a simile or something.

Yanbu - and bloody hell I'm surprised at the harsh comments you have received. "It's like" talking chav is now the norm.

How can you tell if a Californian is drowning in the sea?

They wave and shout 'Like help, kinda'

IMO the most overused word is 'obviously'.

I was stuck on a train today, surrounded by a gaggle of giggling teenage girls. I was like ready to kill them by the end. I have never heard the word used so many times in such a short space of time.

It's as if it isn't top of my list of things to be worrying about of a Saturday evening. It's as though Ant and Dec are more interesting.
