To be upset over our kestrel?

We live in a rural area. All summer we have been right in the territory of a wild kestrel. Every morning, he is on the telegraph wire outside my window, whenever I go out, there he is, hovering over the fields, hunting. It has been a priviledge to be able to get close to something so wild and beautiful!
Anyway, I drove out of the drive this morning, and there he was, mangled on the road! I'm gutted! I know it's nobodies fault, and it's just an animal, but really, it's such a shame!

At our old house (about a 20-minute walk from where we live now), there was a patch of waste ground beyond the fence at the bottom of our garden where a large dog fox brought his vixen every year & they raised their cubs. I nicknamed him Maynard, after one of the local schools. I got quite used to the sight of him & his family in our garden, to the point where I could recognise the cubs when they moved out of the den.

A few months back, I was walking down the busy main road near the Co-op when there was a screech of brakes and a young vixen got hit by a car as she tried to dash across. I and a passerby went into the road & he held up the traffic whilst I picked her up & brought her safely to the kerb, but sadly she was too far gone and died in my arms. She was one of Maynard's daughters.

I ended up carrying her all the way home & burying her in the garden under the cherry tree, as I couldn't abide to think of her just being tossed in the trash. I cried my heart out pretty much all day.

I don't get emotional over humans, but animals do it every time. YADNBU; I would be just as upset in your place.

YANBU. We managed to rescue one years ago - it was quite young, not long out of the nest I think, it flew into our patio windows. Picked it up, thinking it was dead, it woke up in my hands - had quite the shock! It stayed quite calm for ages, assume it was the shock?

Anyway he'd broken his wing, stayed quite happily in his box in our kitchen overnight, then went to animal sanctuary place in morning, now released back to wild. Was amazing to see one so up close, they are amazing, I'm really sad about your poor chap :(

Aw. No, you're NBU, OP (and everyone else who has lost a bird).

I usually think every year about what happened to all the birds in my parents' garden we don't see any more. We used to see a lapwing and a robin every year - and for years we had a thrush and a starling who were friends and played together in the pond. The thrush was particularly silly and after bathing in the pond would lie down on the patio, fluff itself up and spread out its wings and sunbathe.

I love watching the wild life around here, although I wasn't too impressed with the giant Hawk that took off with one of my Chickens a few years back, the kids were screaming and the other Chickens ran for cover, and poor old limpy (our runt chick that we didn't think would make it) was gone in an instant.
I must be over it though as we had some nest pairs and the acrobatics while mating was quite spectacular. A Deer has taken to our back yard now, no dogs to bother her, she has had twins two years in a row and is bold and fearless. I took a picture of them standing at the bottom of our back steps, so pretty. They come by each day to graze and eat the oak tree and bed down under the trees sometimes.
I need to figure out how to put up a picture so you can see our Lady and her babes, they are big already.

At least you had the privilege to enjoy and appreciate it while it was alive.

I love the relationships that we can develop with the wildlife around us. If I'm driving to work very early in the morning I often see a small group of deer grazing in a particular field; I love seeing them.

Of course YANBU. I felt exactly the same way when Alberta my duck was killed. She wasn't my duck, she lived on the pond next door but I fed her a biscuit every morning at 5.30 as I walked to work.

I wish I had . The barn owl lives in the box we put in a field shelter about 5 years ago , and I'm not sure where the kestrel lives , but we were standing in the field , with the owl hunting across our field by the river , and the kestrel hovering really really high . Fantastic . Only problem we've found is that the owl has a habit of sitting on one of the gates while it strings up its dinner into pieces , and more than once I've opened the gate and found bits of vole on my hand . Blerk .

Oh that's sad . We have one we watch most mornings hunting over the horses field , and it's amazing . Best day was when we had a barn owl out hunting the same day , and we watched them pretending to ignore each other , whilst looking for the same breakfast .

Aw, poor you. YANBU at all to be sad. There's a beautiful Jay that visits our garden and I'd be so upset if anything happened to him. Nature around us is so cheering that it's natural to be sad when something bad happens.
