I made it until a week before when dd started helping herself off my plate.

Both mine were earlier, but it was before 6 months was the guideline. Dd1 was at about 4 months dd2 was much earlier 10 weeks? Because she was drinking so much milk 12oz+ ( I gave up breast feeding earlier with her too because she was so hungry!) she got just a little bit of yoghurt to help "fill her up".
Dd2 was a huge baby, I know that mw would be lecturing me on childhood obesity now. 11 years later she's a petite little thing!

It's a reminder of how much advice moves on.... Must remember this when/ if I ever become a grandmother.... And keep my advice to myself!

dc1: advice was weaning at 4 months. He was weaned just short of 16weeks. And he absolutely loved it!
I realized later on that the reason was he was allergic to cow's milk so solid food just felt much much more comfortable for him.

dc2: advice was weaning at 6 months. He was weaned around 5 months old because 1- I couldn't quite understand why the rule had changed within 18 months and 2- he bf, reused to take a bottle or a cup with milk in and I was back at work. So nursery used to give him milk with baby rice to make a bit stiffer. That allowed them to feed him at least.
He was much happier with solids than with a bottle full of milk.

My first two pre-dated the change in guidelines. DD, who came after, wasn't remotely interested in food until somewhere over 9 months.

It was pretty hard finding advice on 'how long is just milk OK?'

Oh and DC2 was on a full bottle of hungry baby formula every 3 hours.

Report
rarebreed · 09/10/2012 11:07

DC1 waited til 6 months but had no interest til nearly 8 months, is now quite fussy.

DC2 was taking food off my plate from 5 months, hadn't planned to start til 6 months but I think he was ready, he will still eat anything and everything.

They were both very large babies.

DS was weaned early. He'd gone from 8oz every 4/5 hours to 12/13oz every two hours (even through the night) and after three weeks of this HV advised trying food & the difference was amazing. Mind you, he's 10 now & still a hungry horace.

DD was about 7/8 months - she just wasn't interested.

DD1 now 19 was 4 months but really wasn't that interested it was more tastes than eating DD2 15 was 5.5 she was premature though and again just really tastes of things both weaned having meals by 7 monthsish

DD was weaned when the advice was to wean at 4 months but it was a couple of weeks after as i didn't want to start weaning her on holiday.

With DS the advice was 6 months but we were probably closer to 7½ months because he just wasn't interested in food.

Softly - don't feel pressured.

If she's not "satisfied on BM" then you need to feed her more often.

Look at your technique, too - how long are you feeding her and how often? Do you offer both breasts each feed (even again and again if you need to)? Does she pull off or do you finish the feed? does she fall asleep while feeding in the daytime? does she feed at night?
all these questions need to be addressed before you give her solids just because bm doesn't seem enough for her. :)

yes I did and most of my friends. Only the less health aware seemed to wean early.

Well I tried the wall paper paste tonight but in a BLW way as that's how I feel comfortable, she put it in her hair, licked it and spat it at DH.

So I can officially tell the HV I tried but no joy.

I tried to wait til 6 months (despite DM and DSis telling me I should wean at 4 months). At 5.5 months, DD stole a tortellini from DH and scoffed it. Guess she made her own decision about it all. She's 17mo and eats all kinds of stuff some of it's even food.

Yep, 6 months here. Just so happened she started sitting up by herself and bringing the food to her mouth.

BLW all the way.

Dd1 was 16 weeks
Dd2 was 20 weeks
Ds1 is 24 weeks on Friday and we've just started with a bit of wallpaper paste baby rice.

He's not ever so keen so we're not forcing the issue Wink

Dd1, 5.5 months and am she virtually grabbed the spoon from my hand.
Ds, over six months, never allowed me to spoon feed him
Dd nine or ten months although dh kept trying to get her to take purées from six months.
All in last seven years.

I don't think the quesiion is about when you stopped breastfeeding but more about when you introduced solids?

OP don't do it if it's just our health visitor saying you should - not if you feel happier waiting. The advice is still to wait until 6 months before introducing solids and feeding solids won't necessarily make your baby sleep better. All sorts of things can make a baby wake in the night and it's natural for them to want to feed more at night sometimes. I know of people who introduced solids and it made the sleep worse.

DD (1998) was advised to wean her at 12 weeks - general advice was 16 wks, but Preemies were told to wean early.

DS1 (2002) was advised to wean at 16 weeks. Didn't last that long, as at 11 weeks he stole a handful of DD's chips and ate the whole lot. And became far more contented instantly.

DS2 (2003) advice was still 16 weeks. He didn't manage solid food until 14 months, due to his muscle problems.

DS3 (2011) Advice was 6 months. Didn't make it because he kept grabbing carrots off my plate. The first time he was 14 weeks old, and I posted a panicky thread on here about how I think he had actually eaten some and I didn't think I had fished it all out in time. I then gave myself a talking to, and let it go.
