...does that even go? He seemed happy enough with it this morning but now imagining the horror that he may reveal as lunchtime approaches.......

nope, you didn't offend at all - I genuinely thought it was funny - it just makes me laugh that someone would think I was posh....my mum would turn in her grave.......if she was dead that is :o

I promise, I'm not mocking you. :( I just read it and my mind ran off on a tangent. I'm not originally from the UK, I don't really worry about the whole class thing. I don't think it's a bad thing to want to feed your children decent food.

And we like fish fingers in this house, too. Wink

OH and we shop at Aldi as well, so maybe that paints a fuller picture of our home life. :)

I really hope I didn't offend. I was just being silly.

ha ha ha

:o

I have been known to bake the odd loaf but not for a long time. Boys wont eat any bread other than normal white.

OH and I were both brought up working class on rough council estates as part of large families but we live in a nice 4 bed detached new build now - boys I would say are probably more or less middle class - if you define that by bedtime stories, lack of slang use etc.

We buy organic apples (we have a bad organic fruit and veg habit anyway) and that costs us at least £15 a week just in apples which is a bit of a confession. We do still however happily have fish fingers for dinner - I guess we don't fit into any class really.

Oh yes, don't even get me started on the false economy that is fast food! :)

I don't doubt you, but it does have that sound about it. As in, will little Horatio be alright with just the swordfish and lemon mayo? It was also not on the artisan 7 grain loaf he prefers, I'm afraid I only had some sourdough ciabatta. Will I be hearing from SS by the end of the day? Grin

(full disclosure- I'd shop at a Waitrose if we even had one nearby! We shop at Sainsburys and Morrisons. And I bake my own bread. etcetc. If I'm laughing at you, I'm laughing at myself, because I wouldn't be surprised if someday little GreenEggsDS find himself staring down a swordfish and ciabatta sandwich wondering what he did wrong to deserve such a thing Grin)

I fed him swordfish for the price of a Happy meal!! .......and a Happy meal is not enough to fill a 5'4 12 year old!

lol Green Eggs we are not exactly posh! We fall somewhere between Farmfoods and Waitrose in our shopping habits. I was making lasagna, No1 son doesn't like it so bought him the swordfish as it was the best looking deal on the fish counter. I know I should have him eat whatever we are having but I am a soft touch.

I agree that cold was maybe the problem :)

.....and it wasn't really a fishy fish - certainly not as smelly as the mackerel he sometimes has.

It's complicated, and advice varies from country to country, but swordfish and shark in particular can build up relatively high levels of mercury because they're at the top of the food chain, and that can build up in your body over time and then cause fetal problems when you're pg - so unlimited portions are not a great idea, and anyone actively trying to become pg should definitely steer clear.

Hmm - it was from Saisburys so i don't know - it was from the fish counter but already packed IYSWIM - so I didn't see the label.

Depends where it's from - it used to be endangered but stocks have increased to safe levels in some parts of the world. It's still unsustainable in others. It also depends how it's caught (the hooks are dangerous for sea turtles or so I've heard). So if it's safely caught from the right place then you're NBU.

Sounds tin. The ds's regularly eat sardine sandwiches, but swordfish sounds much better! Ds2 likes cucumber and sweet chilli sauce - not bad for a five year old!

Report
amck5700 · 25/09/2012 13:29

ooh all your descriptions of sauces etc with it actually make me want to try it even though I am not a fish fan.

All I did was fry it in a wee bit of oil and stick some pepper, butter and lemon juice on the top - he scoffed it in about 5 bites!

he did once eat 3 salmon steaks at one sitting as there were 5 in the pack (only 4 of us), No2 son wouldn't touch his and there was one left over!

Ooh I haven't had swordfish for years, ever since I was living in Southern Spain. Most Saturday nights a few friends and I would tour a few of the local bars 'building up an appetite', and then would finish the night off by visiting a tapas bar and haing their speciality which was a plate of grilled swordfish with a shrimp sauce. I know that sounds dead posh, but it was in a really down to earth formica top sort of place. It was delicious.

Now that's a boast! Wink

P.S. Looking forward to hearing if it was appreciated today.

All I can think of now is I want barbecued swordfish. I love barbecued swordfish. It is pouring with rain, it's freezing cold. It will be a long time until I can have barbecued swordfish again.

Thanks all - I'll post the verdict when he is home. given his communication skills it will either have been "disgusting" or "okay" - that's about as enthusiastic as it gets!
