To think some people on here are trolled far too easily

I know it's because people care and want to help, but when the O.P is so clearly spinning a line and people are still being sucked in, I do wonder why.

OP posts:

Some people are just NICE and want to help I think. And sometimes they get upset and go into denial when some doubts a story they have put their heart into replying to.

I keep reading the title of this thread as, "To think some people on here are trollied far too easily", and thinking it's about people not being able to hold their drink Grin

Oh, didn't you know ?
A troll is easy to spot ...

... her eyes are orange, her tongue is black, & she has purple prickles all over her back Grin

I usually spot them because I'm a cynical old cow.
I don't go on them because I know I'll get attacked by all the others being taken in, so I either ignore or report.

it can be hard sometimes because we are only communicating via writing, it's not always easy to spot insincerity in a short post.

Oh and this must be the only site I'm on where you can't call a troll a troll!

I am shit at troll hunting! Hardly ever spot them. Although I thought one was recently but double checked with a mner I know is good at.spotting first before I reported! Blush

I'd rather not troll hunt. I think it's up to mn. I would hate to be wrong. I have been called a troll in the past which wasn't very pleasant.

I don't spot them usually with the first post as life isn't always predictable. Shit happens to some people.

That thread that Blackberry questioned did start to look fishy with later posts from the OP on and to be honest, I'm glad it was a troll now.

I'm amazed at the length they go to. That was quite a detailed yarn. What goes on in their minds?

Reads like a mills and Boon and keeos going on about depth of feelings. Total crock.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 11/09/2012 19:19

I don't think you can fairly blame people for being taken in! You may be very clever, good at reading the nuances of someone's posting style or very clued-up on the subject they're posting about ... I'm not sure that makes people who aren't any of those things at fault.

Can't see it lisaro

I probably hid it! I'm hiding lots lately

' I'm going to kill myself right now '

These type make me sick.

If you are really going to kill yourself why the fuck are you posting on mumsnet?

Report
lisaro · 11/09/2012 19:03

there's a new obvious one on now, with a reference to 'inking skin'. See what you think,

Report
JugglingWithPossibilities · 11/09/2012 19:01

Oh sorry, that was in response to Katie Morag's post about such threads.

Report
JugglingWithPossibilities · 11/09/2012 18:58

But if someone posts with "I'm about to kill myself right now" doesn't it warm your heart that there's always someone there to listen ?

Even though I can see it could be a tempting opener for an attention seeking troll with absolutely no sense of responsibility

Oh, I read that thread and had no idea it was a troll! Why would anyone make that shit up? She even wrote that she was going to do a big post so she wasn't accused of drip feeding.

Ilovedaintynuts · 11/09/2012 18:40

For me the clue to a troll is a possible suspicious OP but followed by worse and worse developments. The more attention/advice the more the story is spun with more outrageous and upsetting details.

A real OP usually tells you the worst bit at the beginning!

Report

that recent troll thread was so long and involved, you do wonder what drives people to spend so much time typing drivel...

Report
JugglingWithPossibilities · 11/09/2012 18:31

I think even if you might be sceptical you can join in anyway because it just raises interesting issues/ stuff to discuss amongst yourselves.

I'm always a bit tangential anyway, and don't pay over much attention to the OP. My feeling is it's everyone's thread once you join in !

I've felt a bit dubious about a couple of "would you leave your child alone" threads - in X situation ... more because it seems a bit journo-ey rather than any really evil trolling. Could all be completely genuine of course ( covers own arse Grin )

I feel sorry for anyone out there who read that thread who is considering getting out of a bad relationship...... The troll has painted relationship splits to be dangerous and damaging and I worry women will stay in an abusive relationship rather than risk the crap the op was coming out with!

Report
lisaro · 11/09/2012 18:22

Akiss Lots but not all are very detailed, sometimes paragraphed, and the obligatory 'number names'. Oh, and bloody obvious.

Report
BlackberryIce · 11/09/2012 18:20

Yes, that was me asking about cafcass. I've been there with the contact thing so know it would be court ordered OR a self referral. I expected op to come back and say self referral as her tale of woe did not tally with someone who had been through the court system. I suspected troll, so I was then going to ask further questions
