Returned a blouse 2-days after 'validation' on receipt had expired which I hadn't been aware of :( to be told by smug assistant that its acceptable for them to have reduced it in their sale from £25 to £9 Angry

Phantomnamechanger - that dishonest scenario - never.

On reflection I should have put it in the shwop bin along with the bag of stuff I'd already dropped off.

Had no idea that John Lewis offered a better service. Thanks.

I don't think you're being that unreasonable. John Lewis would have taken it back, go there next time. Last time I took something back to John Lewis to change the size they told me it was now on sale & refunded me the price difference. I hadn't even asked. If the M&S lady had at least been a bit apologetic instead of smug you probably wouldn't have felt so badly about it. (I've also heard they treat their staff pretty badly, and badly treated staff take it out on the customers.)

a) I wasn't aware of the time limit and b) that the blouse was so awful that I should never has bought it and c) that I didn't return it sooner

a) It's printed on the back of the receipt; if you're not sure about something you should read this after you buy an item, or ask at the till before you purchase
b) You can't blame M&S for making you buy a blouse you don't like
c) ....see a)

Seems to me the only person you should be annoyed at is yourself. YABU.

M&S have truly horrendous customer service.

We had a idiotic furniture order fucked up every way possible. We were lied to but it was us that were made to feel like liars. Eventually they conceded there furniture and replacements were crap and collected them.

We then had to wait over a month for a refund that they kept promising but only gave after I emailed the Steve Rowe (director of retail) twice and threatened court. 6 months after initial order.

There staff instore and over the phone seem to want to make everything as challenging as possible.

I would never buy from M&S again. Not even a sandwich.

I said you sounded an unutterable prig, not that you were one.

and if we are being pedantic, you used smug and went on to make further personal comments about other shop staff. Complimentary personal comments are allowed then?

but whatevvs!

I have never had any problem when I have needed to return things, for whatever reason.

So you bought something you didn't like? After a month they would take it back at the sale price. What is the problem here? You sound entitled to be honest.

I think the customer service at M&S is excellent. I've got nothing but good things to say about them...but then again I tend to buy things I like and if they then don't fit etc I return them in a reasonable time.

The salesperson was stating her company policy, and what she was able to do for you.why is it that retail staff come in for such a hard time for just doing their job?
If she really was rude then yabvu to complain about it on here rather than inform m and s customer services, her manager I'm sure would want to know if their staff were rude.
If she was just telling you a fact that she couldn't do anything else then just accept it.
One of my staff had a customer return cosmetics that were minimum 3 years old,and despite us offering to change it for her-god knows why but if we don't and we get a customer complaint for anything my entire team lose their bonus for that month-she still wasn't happy!

John Lewis is good but expencieve. I like M&S and I've always found them excellent and never a bother returning items. I've returned several things bought on line to my nearest store and they were just fine.

I have never had a bad experience with M&S customer service. Always very, very good. DS was once violently sick in an M&S Foodhall, he was sitting in the trolley seat, and projectile vomitted. He managed to get the shopping in the trolley, the floor, himself etc. We were mortified, worried about DS etc (he was about 18months at the time). The staff were amazing, they got a replacement trolley, replaced all our shopping in to the new trolley (and changed any items with sick on) all in the time it took us to clean up DS. Very impressive service.... We were able to take him straight home, and had our shopping so we were sorted when we got home. Can't imagine certain other stores reacting in the same way.

Oops...just realised you said that wasn't the actual blouse. Good to know you haven't had a complete taste bypass...unless the actual garment is worse...?

I've always experienced excellent customer service at M&S sorry, as for the OP-YABU but this has already been pointed out & accepted Grin

Normally I would say YABU. Shops don't have to offer a refund at all, not even the next day, just because you decide you don't like it after all.

However, I've been on the wrong side of M&S poor customer service. I bought DD some school shoes which wore out after only a few weeks. They might be good at refunding new, but they are dire if you have a fault. They would not refund or replace or even part credit as it was after the time limit, despite the fact that this is completely irrelevant if the item is faulty/ not fit for purpose.

When I told the woman that I expected shoes to last more than 6 weeks she said "Well, you should have gone to Clarks, then" Shock

I never bought shoes from them again.

I've had nothing but excellent service from M&S. Returned a coffee maker bought as a present for ILs who had done something ridiculous and managed to break it. I had no receipt, I couldn't remember when we had bought it and it was probably ILs fault that it was broken and I still got a full cash refund.

What was your attitude like? Did you go in with smug expectation that you would receive refund or were you friendly? I find most shop staff treat me the way that I treat them.

How can you not be aware of the time limit? It is printed in big letters on every receipt!! If the blouse is so awful, why hang onto it for so long. I am afraid that this is your fault and moaning about M&S isn't helpful when so many businesses are in trouble!!
