I went to a local shopping centre last week and was parked in a mother and baby space when along zoomed a pick-up truck type car the wrong way round the one-way system and shot into the mother and baby space next to me. Middle-aged bloke, no child in sight (there were plenty of other spaces by the way). He didn't want to get out as he could see me looking at him and I wasn't up for an argument so just got the DC out and went on my way BUT went with a smile on my face as in his rush to nab the space he'd driven too far and wrapped the front of his car around the bollard at the end of it, poetic and justice springs to mind.

Like Fabbychic says - not an expensive car at all. I had a GTV which I sold for £2k a few years ago. Plus I see a nice big dent in one of the panels.

I too am quite local, I read a few of the comments put in The News online, and it would seem that he is known on his street for his 'considerate' parking.

jasper it's not really revelling in his misfortune - it's not like he was some poor bloke who had been injured or suffered harm or loss of a family member or something. I just think it served him right in that he was arrogant enough to assume the normal rules didn't apply to him.

jasper - I'm not normally one that revels in the discomfort of others, but, believe me - this gentleman is a blackguard of such epic proportions, that I have spent a good while dredging my conscience for an iota of sympathy and have not yet found one drop. He absolutely did have it coming.

This is local to me and I know of the gent in question. And oh yes, it is truly karma - my DH whooped when he read this story in the local rag.

What intrigues me is this: This man parks here on virtually daily basis as he runs a business in the nearby Historic Dockyard. Like all locals, he knows that the tide comes in and out - and all about springs and neaps and how far the water will come up the slipway. He irritates the fishermen intensely by parking in the way of their loading/unloading activities.

Does anybody share my belief that it may just be possible that his car was 'assisted' from its original parking spot, to one slightly further down the (very slippery, seaweed-and-algae-covered) slipway, closer to the encroaching waters of Portsmouth Harbour? Or would that be a scurrilous lie?

As somebody points out in the article, it's a very old car with bodywork damage so it's not worth much at all, so it's a bit irrelevant. But it is very funny that the persistant charge dodger got caught out in grand style. I hope that karma extends to the people that continuously turn their cars around in our road. Every time I hear a car stop I think it's for me only to see their arses disappear off my driveway.

It shouldn't matter whether it's a flash Alfa Romeo or a bashed up Renault Clio.

I think it's maybe the presumption that if you can afford to buy a lovely car like that you should be able to afford a tenner a week to park it properly!

What kind of car he had is pretty much irrelevant - I agree with that part.

However he blocked local fisherman from being able to take their boats out there presumably causing them more work despite there being a no parking sign AND it explaining why. And he did it daily.

If he couldn't find the £2 to park then he should have found somewhere else to park legally - probably would have been further away which I guess put him off.

Parking illegally wasn't his only option

I referred to him as Mr Flashy Knob-Chops, because he obviously has the arrogance to think he can park where he likes. However, if I saw his car parked in a parking space, i'd just think wow lucky car to have such an amazing car. I hate upper middle class snobbery and arrogance with a passion.
