AIBU?

To wonder why people on Mumsnet keep accusing each other of being a man?

I don't understand it at all.

I also don't like the way it tends to be attached to unpopular opinions or posts that others find unsavoury and what this implies about men. I mean, I wouldn't like to read a bunch of men 'accusing' each other of being a woman pretending to be a man.

Can anyone shed any light?

One of the ways to win at internet is to forget about the thing being discussed and attack the person saying it, or the way they say it.
If you say two plus two equals fore and I say it equals five, I can say that what you have said is spelt wrong and can be ignored. I win at internet.
If you say that two plus two equals four and I still say it equals five, I can say that you're a man pretending to be a woman so I win again.
Some might say that people who accuse others of being men and therefore wrong are sexist.

As I'm a man, please ignore everything I've just said.

I've never noticed anyone here pretending to be the opposite gender - where have you seen them?

I've just been accused of this on the sock thread! I'm neither man nor troll. It's really infuriating because you can't prove anything but you're sat there going I'M NOT A MAN!

I haven't noticed this, but am hideously unobservant. And a chicken.

Yes I have been accused of being a man
I point out that I am actually a cartoon cat which usually shuts them up

People are sometimes suspected of being men.
Sometimes they are suspected of being trolls.
I was on a thread earlier where a poster was suspected of being several people. Or several posters were thought to be one person. Not sure how that worked out.
It's all good fun, and usually just a lighthearted way of pointing out something slightly wonky in their argument.
I guess some posters who are known to be men will be accused of being women at some point Grin

*Daisy - I couldn't help but notice this telling phrase in your OP

"Can anyone shed any light?"

A shed with a light. Only a man could think of that. You are a man aren't you?

This is all nonsense. Anyone who has a willy is a man, surely?

Anyone who isn't a total pushover is a man - anyone slightly anti - feminist is a man, anyone who is basically strong minded is 'a man'

Terrible sexism

Report
ohnoshedittant · 13/05/2011 18:17

I've seen it on feminism, someone disagrees with the consensus and then someone comments 'well you're obviously a man'...
