to think this is rediculously early weaning?

Someone I know has been telling people that she has started weaning her baby boy at the age of 2months!

He wad a big baby, 11pounds and some ounces, and has continued to grown so is now about 14 pounds.

She has been complaining he wasn't sleeping through the night and getting through 9oz bottles every few hours so someone suggested to give him baby rice.

This 2 month old is now having rusk for breakfast and milk, plus baby food for tea and finally a scoop of rice in his bedtime bottle.

Aibu to think this is damaging and far to early. She said she's going to start giving him lunches next week to.

Or am I a bit out of touch, my youngest is 16 months.

Early weaning is occasionally weighed up with survival. If a baby is failing to thrive, not keeping any milk down, then something heavier may be warranted. Also often in CF because creatine is needed for growth and supplements are given in puree it is sometimes beneficial. The vast majority it does more harm than good. Shovelling food in can lead to babies not developing sateity cues/ feedback which can lead to obesity later in life.

When I had DD1 in 94 the guidelines were 4-6 months, but I listened to my ex-MIL instead and weaned at 3 months, because DD1 was small. I shouldn't have listed to MIL, as she was obese, and seemed to be of the view that fat babies=healthy babies.
DS1 I waited til 6 months.
captaincrocfamily- good luck with the thesis, co-sleeping really does seem to make sense, all other mammals do it.

Baby rice is vile stuff. I wouldn't go near it myself, and if it was my very first introduction to the wonderful world of food and tastes, I'd be extremely disappointed and dubious about the whole deal. Grin

If you wean early, all you can give your baby is pureed fruit and veg, and if you're so inclined, wallpaper paste baby rice. In whose world are these more calorific than human milk (or formula)?!

These are the sorted of foods we adults eat if we're going on a diet!! Why would we think they're more likely to fill a baby up and make it sleep better?

Totally agree that early weaning so as to get a baby to 'sleep through' is all about the parent/s and not about the needs of the child.

I waited until 6 months with DS. DD is nearly 4 months now and 98 centile - supposedly a perfect candidate for early weaning - however I have full and complete confidence in my own milk to leave it until 6 months. Wink

I like baby rice... but I like most foodstuffs.
I was weaned at 8 weeks on the advice of a GP. My mum then weaned my younger brother at 3 months.
My MIL had both DH and BIL on rusks at 6 weeks. It helped the routine apparently...
I weaned early at 4 months. 5DollarShake - some foodstuffs are quite calorific - sweet potato/banana for eg. You must have had very good milk drinkers to not even consider it. That makes you lucky.

I left it till 6 months with ds, should have waited till 7 months as it turned out. With dd she waited unitl 12 months, refused anything else but my milk.

Lucky? No I'd say I was well supported by my dh that year and midwife in the early weeks

Higher rates of d&v, respitory illness, allergies and food intolerance, obesity.

At a population level of course. Not easy to identify these things in individual children

Not sure that good support makes babies good drinkers. I meant babies who are fussy and hard to please on breast or bottle..
With these babies the odd bit of baby rice and fruit/veg from 4 months gives everyone the opportunity to have a nice feeding experience and get some extra calories into them.
Reflux is helped by early weaning.
I still find it hard to accept obesity as linked to formula or early weaning. Surely that is just about diet and exercise. I know I'll get flamed but it does seem an easy excuse for eating too much.
