AIBU?

Reading and writing is a two way thing.

Some posters seem to think we should
all write simplistically: The cat sat on the mat.

There are clearly different levels of reading. Take newspapers.

The Sun and The daily Torygraph are both Tory papers.
But they are clearly read by people with different levels of reading ability.

I think old Bill Shakespeare is above most people heads. But only a fool would say he could not write.

Dont complain about posters here until you have tried reading a book by Martin Amis

Go on, be brave , try it.

There is no 'original thread' cumfy. GabbyLoggon is a serial monologuer on MN. Often starts threads (like this one) with random statements which make you think you've walked into the middle of a conversation when you haven't.

OP could you provide a link to the original thread ?

Finally you come up with something we can have a conversation about...

Shakespeare 'is' nothing. Shakespeare 'was' (because I hate to break it to you, but the guy's been dead quite a while) a populist. He wrote plays for cash and lived on the proceeds - a working playwright in the truest sense, as interested in ticket sales as any modern writer. He knew better than to upset the monarch and wasn't above a little regal flattery if he thought it would help. The fact that his 'stuff' doesn't get on national TV so frequently does not mean he wasn't a populist or change the fact that he wrote his plays to be seen by as many people as possible. Theatre productions of his work are as popular as ever.

Dickens was another populist. Wrote stories that people would want to pay to read. Did reading tours to publicise his work and, had he lived today, would probably have been a writer of TV dramas. His 'stuff' isn't on TV that much either.... so it's no benchmark

Then again.. if you don't take a serious ingterest in literature and if you haven't read much, a lot of this will go right over your head... Wink

SHAKESPEARE is not a populist.donnie. How often does his stuff get on national TV?

Corrie is populist...so is Eatenders..so is
the SUN...SUN and Telegraph readers are broadly from a different socio economic group (Telegraph readers tend to be richer.)

That is what their research shows Donnie..

If you dont take a serious interest, you wont know the subject.
People get good at writing about what they have done some reading about.

You cant pluck facts out of mid air. (Unless you are a cheating astrologer)

Love the bit about Shakespeare though. Still being taught to school children (ages 10 - 16) so it can't be that hard now,can it.

Slightly confused about the politics. Why is that a problem in AIBU? The topic wouldn't exist if everyone thought the same way.

The 'countless editors' clearly edit viagra/cialis spam. Don't you see the similarities here.

Either that or the editors work very hard to make this stuff publishable in non-spam outlets.

The countless editors are probably just some of the poeple that talk to her/him through the medium of her head.

TheOleDragon - did you mean to direct your comments at Chile, or were you talking about the OP?

OP - this is a very bizarre thread. Does it have any purpose beyond asserting your allegedly superior intellectual credentials? I don't for one moment believe that you have been published by "countless editors" - that would involve you making some iota of sense. And you don't.

I have no problem reading Shakespeare, Martin Amis or Dostoyevsky.

Some find them confusing.

All find what you write confusing, not because it is a work of literary genius that goes over the head of mere mortals, but because it is bollocks.

It is like the emperors new clothes those too stupid to see it for what it is may be impressed.

Chili, I am fairly new to this board. I have to say that what you have posted on this thread, does seem rather off the the wall. I myself am having trouble understanding the point that your are trying to make here.
