AIBU?

to find fellow campers selfish and noisy

Not sure if im just an old intolerant misery but we just got back from a weekend camping and last night a family of two women one guy and a teen daughter were playin loud rave music until 2 am. They had seen us during the day and saw we had a small child and i am pregnant. I would normally say something but they looked a bit nasty and i was a bit wary. I used earplugs and slept ok but dh was awake most of the night but didnt say anything cos he thought hed wake up me and dd. Some people said something in the end and as i predicted got a mouthfull,i did look before i used the plugs to see if there was a number we could call but there wasnt. The point is you pay them to provide you with a service the same as any accomodation so why should you be the one to have to complian and cause bad feeling. People were actually leaving a day early as they were tired and couldnt face another night. I like to think i am a seasoned camper but do find people very oblivious to other people. What do you think shall i just remember to pack my plugs every time i go haha

MummyTubb - you would think the family who told you off would know better - still I'd put money on it being their first. Was it?

YANBU - I think music until 2am is unacceptable, and I would complain to the site owners.

On the other hand, we also went camping this weekend and were told off by fellow campers for making too much noise and waking their small child. I'm sorry their child woke up, but it was only 7.30pm on Friday night and we had two tents to pitch, dinner to cook, and some very excited children (aged 3, 4, and two 6 year-olds). Admittedly we weren't tip-toeing around, but we weren't being unreasonably noisy. I think they were just cross because they'd been there all week when it had been quiet and then a load of people (like me) turned up on Friday night for the weekend.

I was less than impressed at the couple who decided to have a full on domestic at 5am, including, quite literally, ripping their tent down and screeching off.

We go to a lovely local site where cars are not allowed to park on the field. It seems to make a difference to feel of the site. (this is a real field and bog site and it's also a long trek to the bog too)

YANBU but I'm not really sure what you can do about it - complaining in the evening can be very confrontational when drink has been taken. Certainly complain in the morning.

I hope you had a quiet wee.

We once camped in the French Alps. I got up during the night for a wee and was confronted by a uniformed guard with a German Shepherd... thought it was a bit much at the time but there was no noise on that site after 10.30!

I suppose it's got to be pretty hard to enforce though, hasn't it? I'm fairly new to camping and I find it hard to equate the camping I've witnessed (and some of the groups of people camping) with what I imagine my DH did in his childhood with his family. Talking to them, it was a wholesome, almost Famous Five kind of experience and that's not something I've seen an awful lot of - though maybe it depends on the campsite.

Everywhere I've camped supposed has rules about noise, but I've never seen them enforced. For me this is the worst thing about camping, beats by far the hay fever, midges, rain, mud...

So hacked off I had to post it twice.

We joined the Caravan Club last year (old fart emoticon) for this very reason. Their sites don't have pools/bars/amusements etc., and have stringent rules on noise, are always beautifully maintained with good facilities.

Lots of retired people, but also lots of families.

Have found the noise issue on campsites has got worse over the last 10 years, and I hate it - rudeness, foul behaviour and total lack of thought for other people In fact I am so hacked off with stuff like this that I am afraid my post may be rather incoherent.

That's why I've never been except once a few years ago when there were lots of small children screeching till 11pm then off againat 5am.

DH takes DS every year for some male bonding but this year they're going to an adults only one (DS will have to look 18 )

shockers - eeew! Nasty.

Parts of camping are lovely - but I think I'm just too anti-social to do it. I like a nice empty campsite!! And we've been so lucky before as DD was a nursery that broke up early for holidays so we always managed to go earlier than most and have a at least a few days where it wasn't so much of a problem, but pretty soon, you go out for the day and return to find yourself surrounded by other people. And that's when it starts... But now DD1 is at school so we go at the busy time with everyone else. I can't face it this year - so we've booked a cottage in a seaside town in Suffolk instead. With electric lights (that's the bit I'm most excited about!).

My dp and ds returned early this morning too after aborting a weekend camping trip cos of a noisy gang of people that pithed their tent bang smack next to him yesterday and then shouted and swore at each other and their kids all evening till about 1am! Their kids were complaining they couldn't sleep but the adults were still making a racket and just told the kids to "shut up otherwise I'll come and s**t on your face"!!!!!

Only the rain drowned out a bit of their noise (can you tell they were camping in Wales??!!)

ledkr- were you camping in swanage by chance?
We were there with some other families and you described our night. Loud music and shouting/talking, then people shouting at them to be quiet.
