Hi all, I have a library job interview coming up but I have to do a 5min presentation for a Rhymetime session for ages 3-5yrs.
Can anyone give me tips/ideas of what is relevant/suitable please?
A friend suggested a prop/toy and say oh he/she is shy so maybe if we sing he/she may come out to play....
Fully prepared to make a tit of myself as the job seems a good match for me. Manyvthanks in advance.

All of the ones I've ever been to start with a hello song with actions good luck for the interview.

Some of the ones I've been to have had:

  • sheets with the words printed out big to hold up
  • a box of little instruments (bells etc) to shake along to songs (grand old Duke of York etc)
  • all the kids got a different animal (small soft toy/puppet) and they went round doing old macdonald and every verse the kids had to hold up/shout out their animal to decide the noises
  • option at the end for kids to do their favourite songs that you haven't done

I was going to suggest animals too. Could you have a little bag of farm animals to go through with the children, talking about them and the noises they make, then sing Old Macdonald? Pull a different animal out each time.

Oh! Don’t forget to introduce yourself with a big cheery smile and a wave at the start. I’ve done teacher interviews where they have been so nervous to get started they have forgotten to tell the children their name. Good luck!

I went to one locally for a few years. They always started with a hello train song, then they’d read a book enthusiastically (best ones would involve some actions the kids could get involved with) and it would end with another few well known songs. A book with hand puppets would be well received. Just make sure you’re smiley and enthusiastic.

A good opening and closing song so the children know the session is starting and ending. The two I go to - one simply does the same opening/closing song and asks the kids to see if they can rememebr bits at closing, the other does a “hello” song and a “goodbye” song. Helps parents to tell their toddler it’s time to go…

Agree with pps animals also good - you can ask for input from kids for old Mac Donald for example. I’ve been at a couple which are hilarious (as much as library rhyme time can be) as the kids give silly animals. For example the other week we were singing and “on his farm he had a spider” and then the lady running it asked the kids to let us know what noise the spider did “wiggle wiggle.” So I’d say kids input is definitely good and makes both the kids and adults laugh

Also run through and time yourself. 5 minutes actually goes pretty quickly when you’re working with toddlers - you wouldn’t have time for a full hello and goodbye song, for example, as well as an activity.

Old Mac Donald always goes well. You could have cuddly animals to pull out of a bag for each verse and use the Makaton sign for the animals

Hi, would be great if you could share your interview experience. I have a similar interview soon where I need to do a 5 minute interactive presentation to the interview panel (story or nursery rhyme). Would appreciate some advice. Thank you 😊
