How would you expect the restaurant to rectify this mistake?

After much deliberation, decided to place an order with a highly recommended restaurant as a thank you to a close friend for providing some much needed help recently. This person LOVES ribs/American bbq type food, so although it was expensive in my eyes and a total pain, it seemed like an appropriate thank you.

Placed an order for 2 x full racks of ribs (£14 each) + 2 x portions of chicken wings (£7 each) and 4 x sides (total £22) total order £64. I had to collect the order, so got a cab to and from the restaurant. Paid for my order which came to £61.50, I assumed that perhaps because it was a takeaway order each item may have been a tiny bit cheaper hence the difference in total.

Got home, no ribs in the bags! Gutted. Contact restaurant who insisted that I only ordered 2 x half racks of ribs and that they were in the bag 🙄 they offered me a refund for the ribs, but as they were saying I only ordered 2 x half rack of ribs, that would only work out £19 refund. I declined and said I would wait until somebody higher up could contact me and deal with this.

I got in touch with the owner via email and although they asked if I could rearrange the evening and they would provide the order again in its entirety free of charge and deliver it (despite not offering delivery) it just wasn’t an option, my friend was travelling back to their home country the next day. I do very much appreciate the gesture, but I kind of feel like I want an explanation? How did my order total £61.50 if they are saying I didn’t even have 2 x full racks on the order, is a £19 refund acceptable when we were left without the main courses, only a few sides and I’ve had an absolute palava going to collect the order in a taxi costing me £20! At the same time, I don’t know what I expect them to offer.

Am I being unreasonable to be pissed off? It’s really annoying me and I sitting here £80 out of pocket (I appreciate its not their fault I had to get a cab, but it’s not my fault they didn’t provide the correct order!)

What would you think is a reasonable solution?!

The restaurant has offered a full meal for free - unfortunately for you the ribs were for a friend and you don't eat meat. This isn't the restaurants' problem.
Email and ask nicely if they can give you a choice between a refund or ribs. If they don't give you a refund see if you can charge someone else the money you lost in exchange for taking them with you to the free meal. Job done.

You paid £61.50. You are now owed £25.50 so ask them for that. Your taxi costs are irrelevant.

BaconMassive · 28/09/2021 13:14

I would get a taxi down there right away to get the £19 back.

Maybe take the unwanted chips back and ask for £25.50?

To even be £9 out of pocket is unfair.

An explanation? They fucked up and offered a refund.

Accept it.

The restaurant should refund you for the full amount of missed goods. It's not good enough that the refund offered falls short of the amount they should be refunding .
Those of you saying it's only £9 out so what- How about you go to a restaurant and offer to pay them £9 short of the bill- do you think they would find that ok?

£14 for a full rack is cheap , am confused did you order two full racks of ribs just for your friend?

Report
sashh · 28/09/2021 13:53

I think what they offered is reasonable, just a shame your friend wouldn't get to share it.

Ask them for a credit note for the value they have offered, if it's somewhere you get food from often it will be worth it.

Totally irrelevant and ridiculous comparison.
OP is £9 of food short.
If you receive £50 of food in a restaurant and your bill is £59 than d'oh you say something (and it's quite clear the OP says a lot)
If you receive £59 of food and offer £50 you're a scammy chancer

I’m with you OP - email them with a breakdown of exactly what you received and take this away from the amount you paid. This is what they owe you. Doesn’t matter what it was for. All that matters is that you were, in effect, overcharged for the food you received.

And I totally get what you are saying about being out of pocket £80! You wouldn’t have minded paying £80 if the whole meal was there and it went to plan. But without the main part of the meal, it feels like the £80 was a waste of money.

@Geamhradh my point is she should get what she has paid for and be offered a refund for the missing amount, not a few pounds short, for the missing amount, all of it.
Just as people should pay for the whole bill and not just what they feel like paying.

I think the only think you can expect is a refund for the balance of the food you ordered and didn't pay for.
I would hope for a full refund given that you incurred a £20 taxi for a meal that was ruined, the ribs were the main course and some sides and chicken wings is not a full meal. Highlight to the restaurant that your meal was ruined, you don't eat meat and therefore a replacement meal is no good to you. I doubt you will get this, given what they have offered so far but otherwise can you accept a meal when you have friends again especially if they are offering to deliver it, it sounds like they definitely don't want to part with any more cash.
Ignore the crazies on here saying that you should be happy with a ruined evening and arguing about maths.

@Geamhradh what right do you have to make any sort of assumptions about me? I’ve asked a simple query as to what others would expect? It’s quite clear that you yourself have alot to say about people whom you know nothing about? Rude much.

This is one of those splendid threads where 99.9% of posts point out YABU and so you attack them relentlessly.
I have made no assumptions about you. I've read your (many) posts on this one. On the basis of those posts, you have gone on , a lot about what you (mistakenly) think you are due.
And rude would also include you accusing people of being the restaurant owner if they dare point your grabbiness out.

  1. Always check takeaway food before you leave
  2. Learn to drive
  3. Live in a city - Deliveroo
  4. If you're offered a full refund - take it.

But I haven’t said that I think I’m due anything? I asked what others thought, I would have liked to have been offered an explanation as to why my bill was what it was considering they have said I didn’t order what I was missing…..the rest adds up, so, what HAVE I paid for, if not for what I thought I had??? I have expected anything at all other than that, I have replied to peoples posts, should I have asked my initial question and then never returned? I haven’t sat here bleeting on about being owed this or that? I didn’t “accuse” a poster of being the owner because they “pointed out my grabiness” (I am NOT being grabby, I don’t think I’m owed anything in particular and never said I did, I do think I should be refunded for the items I paid for and do not receive, but as it stands, I haven’t been offered that) I suggested they might be because they don’t appear to have any posts anywhere else about anything else, just those on here. I haven’t attacked anybody full stop, let alone relentlessly! Your offence over this thread is bizarre in itself.

@TatianaBis

I can drive
The restaurant is not linked with deliveroo, had it been, I’m 99% sure that the deliveroo driver would not have routed through my order therefore I’d be in the same position
I wasn’t offered a refund, I was offered a partial refund not even amounting to the value of the missing items….

You ordered over the phone so not record
You got a taxi because I’m guessing you were too drunk to drive

I reckon YOU have recalled this incorrectly OP!! Grin

I would ask them to itemise the £61.50 because you’re not sure what you’ve paid for. I think it’s reasonable to expect a refund for whatever amount you paid for ribs that weren’t provided.

@girlmom21 yes, I factually can drive (this has been clarified for the poster who said “learn to drive”) I have learnt, I have a drivers license.

At no point have any toys been thrown out of a pram, I contacted the restaurant as anybody would, and as the person on the phone was unable to clear the matter up, I said I would await a call back from somebody who could….I’m failing to understand what logic I have misunderstood? I haven’t been provided with any logic what so ever at this stage.
