Just watching an episode of Who Do You Think You Are and it got me thinking how family fortunes change and it can be seen by the jobs each generation does. How does your family pattern of jobs change? For me it’s:

Mother: teacher, Father: doctor
Maternal grandfather: fireman, Maternal grandmother: lady’s maid until married.
Paternal grandfather: doctor, maternal grandmother: nurse until married
Maternal great grandfather: merchant sailor, Paternal great grandfather: baptist preacher

I broke the trend by not being a housewife and by going to uni. My nana was disgusted with me! Fancy leaving your children to nurse the sick! Disgusting!

DH is in the same industry as his dad was. His mother was a journalist. Not sure what his grandparents did tbh! I think his grandfather had his own business possibly in carpentry.

Me- civil service
DP- librarian

Mother- nurse at first, later retrained in education related role
Father- factory work, delivery driving

Maternal GM- author, housewife, some secretarial work at points
Maternal Gf- copywriter, general advertising shenanigans

GGM-housewife, GGF- butcher
GGM- worked for BT GGF- shipbuilders

Paternal side-
GM- hairdresser, housewife
GF- Artist, owned small factory

Not sure about GGPs on that side, someone had a shop for sure and there was involvement in boat building.

One side of my family has definitely been a lot more socially mobile than the other, but we are the first consistent generation to go to university (I come from a long line of bright women who were prevented from taking up their grammar school places, as was my dad actually). We did do the family tree on the maternal side and there are some awesome jobs in the 1800s including 'umbrella tipper' and some vaudeville acts.

Mother was an NHS receptionist, before that worked in the supermarket. Dad was an engineer.

Maternal nan ran a canteen and maternal grandad did various things, painted lines on roads latterly I think.

Paternal nan worked in a factory making car parts and paternal grandad was a die caster.

My parents were both teachers, my paternal grandmother was also a teacher, paternal grandfather was a pepper farmer, maternal grandmother was a SAHM and maternal grandfather a cabinetmaker and watercolour painter. I'm not sure about my great-grandparents, except my paternal great-grandfather, who was an undertaker.

Too uninteresting to list.

My father was an engineer, my mother a housewife.

Beyond that miners, labourers, agricultural workers. All very poor and illiterate.
