What’s it like living in Sheffield?

Would love to hear from MNers in Sheffield. What areas are nicest if you want easy access to the Peaks as well as the arts, with some good independent shops, a nearby park and nice bars/cafes.?

What it’s like- good transport, great for accessing the peaks, good local small businesses lots of fantastic coffee shops & cafes especially around s17 & s11. Lovely parks and walks; millhouses park, botanical gardens, rivelin. Shopping is okay but you’re close to manchester & Leeds for shopping days. Couple of train stations.
The city centre is absolutely dreadful but you don’t really need to go in, I haven’t been for years.

I would recommend s10, s11 and s17 for what you’re after.

£600k is good budget for Sheffield. You’ll have lots of choice. I’d suggest lodge moor, Crookes, Crosspool or possibly rivelin as both are the right side for heading straight to Manchester

Crosspool, Fulwood, Lodgemoor, whimsy being very family orientated have a lot of retired people.

Pricey though, particularly Fulwood which is beautiful. Very safe areas too so very popular with families.

I live close to Sheffield, (next town over) and love to go to the city centre. There's plenty to do, although it's not exactly London which i'm used to. The town I live in is lovely and there's great transport links within the city, tram, buses, trains and taxis. Meadowhall is also hell great with plenty of decent shops.

Definitely worth considering renting out our London place rather than diving straight in - got a bit of time to think about it.

We aren’t in a great area of London - budget probably around £600k. I don’t know why Sheffield particularly appeals to us - we have had a couple of city breaks and also stayed in the Peaks a few times. It just seems like a really good mix of city and open spaces - in London, you have to go so far to get to somewhere wild for a great blowy walk.

Dore seems to have good access to rail links to Manchester - I do like a train and that’s a lovely line. Will look at Lodge Moor.

Dore and Totley Station direct train access to Manchester. Also max 5 mins drive into Peaks. Lots of semis in Totley and nice terraced in Dore. Good luck!

I live in Lodge Moor, S10.

We can walk into the peaks. The reservoirs are about 1.5 miles walk, Strange Edge is a 3 mile walk, Hathersage is a 6 mile walk.

We are very close to the snake pass to get to Manchester.

We love it here. Feels like the best of both worlds. Close to town but also close to countryside.

i would rent yours and then rent in sheffield for at least a year. once you sell in london there is go going back

sheffield is ok but loads of better places if you have total choice

I don't live in Sheffield, but a town very close and have many friends in Sheffield. It has good transport links, lovely culture in the centre. However I'd potentially look at areas just outside of Sheffield for living, as unless you want to spend a lot a lot of the places aren't super nice to live.

@BikeRunSki gave good suggestions, then you wrote about wanting a granny annex - there are some houses in Walkley with an integral garage in the ground floor then 2 more floors above. I recently worked in one where they had converted the garage into a granny annex, then the very next post said Walkley!
Do you know your budget?

If you want good value for money, look at Walkley. It's near countryside and parks, 20 minutes to town by bus and has lovely cafes.

I’d be retired but would be hoping to spend time with family in Manchester as well as coming back to London for visits to family there. DH would be self-employed and working from home. I’d love to get a dog and we love the peaks for walking, but also love a diverse city. We would be moving from a small London house and ideally looking for a medium sized terraced or semi property with a garden. Ideal would be to have a self contained flat in the basement for (potentially) elderly parents/rental income but I’m not sure we could manage that costwise in the areas we’d like. I get the feeling property prices there are rising faster than London. We’re not quite ready to move yet but plan a to explore the area thoroughly post-covid.

Cultural places are mostly in the town centre but everywhere is easily accessible. All the above are good but pricey (by Sheffield standards). It depends on your budget and other requirements. Where will you be working? Some bits of the city are easier to travel from/to than others.

Normally fabulous, loads of interesting places near by, lots of countryside and lovely town centre. Cheap houses. Right now it's pants (tier 3 😂)
