Crochet wannabe and no clubs....

Hi there

So I really want to be able to crochet.My sister helped me crochet a blanket when my son was born...she just started me off told me what to do and I did it.This was 18 years ago, I have bought magazines and watched you tube vids but I need help. There are no clubs near me....I don't know what else to do....do I just give up the notion...

I did a course one morning to learn the basics.
Any wool shops? They might be able to let you know of groups or classes.

I know you say that you’ve watched YouTube videos, have you watched Bella Coco’s tutorials on there? Watching those was how I taught myself. She explains things very clearly.

I love crochet and have learnt most of my stuff from YouTube.

The crochet crowd is really good for step by steps. Bob Wilson 123 is good as well. I made a lovely blanket from her tutorials.

There's one club near me, that I can't go to because it's mornings once a month. On a day I work, so no good.

I'd love to join a club, and I'm contemplating setting one up at a time that suits those who work.

Otherwise, I've also watched Bella Coco in the past, I found it useful.

Bella Coco sounds familiar...I will check out everyone's suggestions thank you. Twizbe you are kind I am not insta savvy I will try, I feel like such a fool that I cannot just learn it from you tube. My sis and I live 5 hours apart so I don't see her enough. I did ask at my local craft/haberdashers they suggested somewhere but that proved fruitless. Covid is not helping either...

Don't laugh I bought a little crochet a turtle thing from Aldi which I would love to make and it really frustrates me that I am not able to do it...

This may sound odd - but ask on your local Facebook if there is a group, if yes, message than and ask if someone would perhaps meet you in a park/pub and show you what you need to know on a 1-1 ?
There maybe someone who will in these weird times.

There are a few FB groups for crochet which I have found very helpful. Also Bellacoco tutorials on YouTube

Bargebill...I think we are getting to the root of my problems.I don't inhabit the world of social media...I am a qualified teacher although I don't do it anymore...had to boycott SM to preserve a private life.

Oh dear. Sign up for Facebook under a nickname? And be strict with your security protocols and don’t accept or whatever it is anyone as Facebook friends? (That’s what I do - I treat it a bit like a library card to a world of information but not people iyswim)

Are there any wool shops near you? They may have classes or create an anonymous fb account to ask- crochet beginners on fb is really helpful and insta is easy to keep anonymous if you want to

I learnt from YouTube, it took a while for it to click and I crochet like a knitter as that's what I learnt first but it gets there in the end.

Would photos/pictures be better than videos? I can’t learn from videos but can if pictures are laid out in order.

It sounds like you have the absolute basics down so I really urge you to look into doing a Crochet Along. Scheepjes are the masters of this, they have utterly idiot proof step by step guides and amazing videos. There’s one starting next week, don’t be put off by how complex this blanket looks, I assure you that you’ll do it!

If you join the Facebook group too there’s loads of people to help and advise. Since they’ll all be working the same pattern you’ll have plenty of help.

I promise you, absolutely, that you can do this blanket. If you’ve already made a basic one then you 100% can do it.

The videos they produce are so idiot proof it’s almost amusing!

I really recommend starting with a simple blanket. It will allow you to practice the basic stitches and figure out what you like with crochet

Have you tried doing a basic granny square? I think it's easiest to start with that even if you don't want to make a full granny square project. A lot of blankets begin with a long row of chains which is horrible to crotchet back into even for someone who is experienced.

I would use this video and get a ball of cheap aran weight yarn and a 5mm hook to make it slightly easier.

Good luck! It's definitely worth persisting.
