I think my child had leukaemia

His cousin had it and was the same. Pale, feels warm but no temp, crying all the time.

A reverse situation, but my pediatrician (when I was US based) was certain my son had leukemia. I was confident he didn't as I and my elder DD had the same symptoms as small children. He was vocal and certain, my DS had to go through invasive tests and as I thought he didn't have it. Just to say that there are loads of similar things that are much less scary than leukemia.

Op, my DD refused to walk , cried a lot and had no temperature. Turned out she had septic arthritis- a very treatable infection - in her ankle. She had no temperature because she was little and her immune system was not fully developed. My Dd needed to be admitted to hospital for IV antibiotics and we went to A&E. I think you should do the same.

Refusing to walk when out and about or not walking to play with toys? I would assume a leg injury if unable to walk and he should be seen at a and e.

OP, no-one on here can give you an answer either way.

If you’re worried enough to think that he has leukaemia, you should have been banging on the gp’s door weeks ago.

I also think a & e is a good idea

@Phillycheesesteak

Hes refusing to walk. He is able to walk

I would go to A&E. Have you got a support network OP?

And I would say he sounds like he's in enough pain to definitely justify an OOH visit. He might have an ear infection or something.

Report
DressingGownofDoom · 30/08/2020 18:59

I don't know what's up with him, but if these symptoms have been going on for weeks, surely he'd have other leukaemia symptoms by now - bleeding gums or a rash? It isn't the kind of illness that goes undetected easily especially when someone who is as knowledgeable about it as you is looking out for signs Thanks

If you really are that worried and it's gone on for weeks then call out of hours. Don't leave it until Tuesday... He could have an ear infection, could be teething, experiencing growing pains, getting a cold, recovering from a virus etc. The list is endless. If you in your heart know he is unwell though then you need to get him checked.

@Phillycheesesteak

I will book an appointment this week

You must be very worried. This is understandable given your experiences.

Get some help asap - it is ok to say 'I am concerned because my child has the same symptoms my nephew had when he had leukaemia'.

Is he refusing to walk, or unable to walk? Is he distractable at all?

OP, of course you are worried, probably panicked, after what happened in your family. I am so sorry about that.

There are 101 possible reasons why your 2 year old could be ill like this, Including molars coming through, and it is a shame you haven’t been properly reassured by your HV with a proper look at him.

Get straight to the GP on Tuesday and explain why you want to be seen that day: the length of time he has been ill, and the family history. The urgency so that you can be given the right support and get your worries addressed, and hopefully a swift resolution and return to health and sparkle fir your little boy.

@captainprincess

A&E would be suitable for this, it's neither an accident or an emergency.
I know it's worrying, but as it's gone for for weeks the OP can book a GP appointment for next week.

If the child won’t walk he needs to be seen in A&E tonight. It is completely suitable for A&E and I say that as someone who worked in Paediatric A&E for years.

Take him to A&E and explain your concerns, they will do bloods which will likely rule it out at which point you can stop panicking. If he has it, which would be very unlikely, then they can start treatment.

Honestly op you are just going to drive yourself crazy over this so get it sorted tonight.

Report
KnobChops · 30/08/2020 18:18

Op if you’re that worried just take him down to A&E. they really won’t mind. If at all suspicious they can run a quick blood test. They can also see what else it might be.

It's totally understandable that you arent able to be rational about this OP and no one here is going to have the answers. But it is very unlikely to be anything serious but you are absolutely doing the right thing to get it checked.

How is his speech? Is he able to tell you/show you if something hurts?

Definitely book him in for an appointment, but please try not to panic.

Whenwillow · 30/08/2020 17:52

I think, given the loss of your child's cousin, that it is understandable that you are worrying about this.
Get your little one booked in at the GP as soon as you can, and explain that this is what you are worried about. Hopefully you can be reassured that it is not leukaemia, and if God forbid, it is, he can get onto being treated straight away.
It's more likely to be something much less nasty.
Best wishes xx

Its most likely to just be a virus OP. Theres many mant things it could be before leukaemia, dont panic. Many toddlers cry all the time and it could just be his age. Feeling warm doesnt really mean anything.

Make a drs appointment, get him seen. But try not to worry before you need to

Sounds like teething, but definitely go to the GP for reassurance. You are understandably very anxious.
