So far I've rejected Cinema, the V and A (shut) Churchill war rooms (shut), docklands miseum (shut), there's no tickets for the National gallery earlier than 3.45. No shows obvs.

All I've come up with is going to look at the carriages in the Royal Mews (Buckingham palace state rooms are shut so this is the only bit open) plus wandering about Confused

Anyone know of anything else that's open?

I was in town last week and it was really quiet but I was going to work so not looking for something to 'do'.

Walk along disused railway line. Start at top of Finsbury Park ( entrance near kids playground on hill) the walk to Highgate. Have tea in the village then explore woods.

I see someone has already suggested it but Epping Forest is beautiful. If you get off the train at Chingford Station (Zone 5, 25 minute overground journey from Liverpool Street) the Forest is literally 5 minutes maximum walk to the right (you can see it from the Station Carpark)

Then you can stroll through the trees, take a bike ride or stop off in one of the pubs in the Forest for a meal. There are deer and other wildlife that you can see of you are quiet enough, it is a magical place. It was given to the people of London by Queen Victoria.

It is vast, it spreads from Leytonstone to Epping.

I was in London yesterday. I was really surprised how many shops in Covent Garden and Camden were closed. It was like a ghost town.

Careful about the Inns - lots of pedestrian and car gates locked at the moment.

The Barbican is open, they have a nice indoor garden as well as both free and paid art exhibitions.

There are outdoor theatre and music shows re-starting.

@LaurieFairyCake

So I had membership of Kew and royal palaces last year so saw everything at least twice last summer

Will never go to Hampstead ponds again as they let penises into the women's ponds, hate zoos, sick of country walks and live next to a royal park that I think I've been in every day in last 5 months

I'm planning to go out tomorrow as I've just realised it's my only day off in the next two weeks so that rules out a few of these as they don't open til Saturday

Totally resonates that I now want to move City til it opens up again Grin

I'd just go for a walk about but it's going to be 34 degrees and we've both been really ill from having teeth out and I have a sinus infection or dental abscess which means by face is still really swollen

I may be looking for the Holy Grail

There are some swimming pools open

Can you get a Clipper down to Greenwich? Greenwich Park is lovely if you've not been before and I think the Cutty Sark has reopened.

National Gallery last week wonderful and actually more enjoyable for having less people. Amazing collections. Need to pre-book.

The gardens at Syon Park are open and glorious just now. Plenty of shady glades, and deserted.

The City is also deserted at the moment if you want an urban architecture walk. Same for the Temple.

Right by sky garden is St Katharine Dock - take a boat ride?

Report
37KAT · 30/07/2020 16:47

Alternative day out is the East End.
Start with a visit to Sky Garden (limited free tickets, book in advance)

Then walk up through spittlefields market to Brick Lane, look at the street art, grab a coffee, loads of places to eat - street food or restaurants. Usually something going on at the Truman brewery. Lots of art galleries or pop up events. Quirky shops.
