Films to watch with teens

WokusPocus · 21/07/2020 15:13

I'm thinking of introducing a regular family film night as a good opportunity to spend some time with my teens, who I feel I see less and less of these days. My dd16 and ds14 are in it for the snacks up for it. Any suggestions on what we can all watch together? We are a fairly unshockable bunch so it doesn't have to be particularly 'family friendly'. Generally funny or gripping is a good way to go - I don't' enjoy horror but like some creepy spine-chillers. TIA Smile

@BigusBumus - I'm so glad you enjoyed it - sounds like you had the evening I was hoping for! I will not be deterred...

@WokusPocus Off the back of contributing to your list I watched Phone Booth with my 13yr and 17yr old sons. It was a rare treat to have the 17yr old there with us so the 3 of us and 3 dogs all on one big sofa. I was squashed up one end and was in and out the kitchen bringing snacks and drinks the whole time but I didn't care, it was just so nice not to be on my own watching TV for once. 💕
Oh and they thought the film was great

We watched 1917 in the end. Nearly chose Get Out but i just didn't have the stomach for horror that day.

The kids enjoyed it but thought it was 'a bit long' Hmm. It wasn't quite the idyllic family atmosphere I had been hoping for; there had been lots of sniping at the dinner table and no one was in a great mood by the time we sat down to watch. Second attempt next week!

We watched Vacation the other night and it's very, very funny, although a little crude in places.

Cellular is a FAR better film than phone booth if thrillers are their thing.

That's my dds kinda film starting around this age. She also loves panic room, flight plan and red eye which are all similar

She also likes horror which I know you said isn't your thing but the "gentler" ones like scream might be ok

Action movies the die hards, mission impossibles

She likes a good heist movie too - tower heist, oceans eleven, now you see me, point break (original of course),

She LOVES a movie with a good twist too - there's a thread in the film section for these

My two enjoyed the series of What We Do in the Shadows so I'm planning to try them on the film.

We are on a Wes Anderson marathon watch with my teen dds atm. Watched Moonlight Kingdom this weekend and loved it.

The Ghibli movies are a big favourite too.

Eurovision - yes! Anything with Will Ferrell is a win.

New euro vision movie if you fancy something silly.

What about some of the gangster films like The Godfather, Heat... Or things like Oceans 11, Thomas Crown Affair (though the sex scene on the stairs might be uncomfortable haha)

Some of the historical older ones like Robin hood Prince of Thieves, Braveheart etc

Indianna Jones is always fun. Lord of the rings?

Handsome Devil is my absolute favourite for this age group, feel good film but not naf.
If you're ok with Schindlers list, then The Pianist is brilliant.

Oh oh! What about Phone Booth! Nice tense thriller without being utterly terrifying.

@PassingByAndThoughtIdDropIn we all love the Blue brothers here! Alien and Schindler's List could be winners too. I am also extremely impressed that your dd is into Fred Astaire - I love those old movies with a passion. I recently bribed dd into watching Desk Set with Katharine Hepburn with me - but she wasn't impressed.
