I'm Scandinavian, I try my best with your language, but am still bewildered about livingrooms/dens, toilets/loos etc Grin.

But can any of you enlighten me on two words?

Where I'm from we call it summer house, what do you call it... Cottage, holiday home, second home and what is the difference?

Secondly wood/forrest, is a wood smaller? How small, then? Grin
Do you call it wood or woods?

Just confused can you help, please.

I totally forgot the other day that fanny means bum in American English, and there was a joke in the program i was watching about licking a cat's fanny 😐😐

You may well snigger... But 'front bottom'?! Speaking about euphemisms 😂.

Always snigger at "Fanny Pack". (Bum bag.)

I have to say, I always laugh when Americans want the loo and ask for the bathroom. My ex boss was German but used Americanisms and would mention bathroom, I always imagined him in a towelling robe with a rubber ducky! I don't get rest room either. I don't go there to rest!

He would also go on about 'fanny' meaning backside (another Americanism) whereas in UK it is 'front bottom'. I had to tell him not to use the word!

Or as we say round here..'a static'

I believe what we would call a 'static caravan' is what the Americans would call a trailer.

Or mobile home. Or the fancy commercial term "park model." But, yes, most people where I live in the US would say trailer.

A static caravan is also called a mobile home. Even though they are only mobile if you have an HGV and a "wide load" escort vehicle!

I would so love to have a little summer home like yours (cabin/chalet/whatever we've decided to call it), OP. I enjoy watching or reading about anything Scandiwegian where there are often people going off to their summer houses and pootling about in their boats and fishing and having a wonderful outdoor life. It just seems such a civilised way to live.

Previous posters are right, I think, in that property is very expensive in the UK, so is land, and most people just can't afford to buy somewhere like that. And yes, it's massively crowded here.

I grew up in a seaside village near miles of sand and I'd love a little place there now. It would be like Wallander's house on the beach. But because it's in the UK it would cost me about £750,000 Grin

giantangryrooster That can be what they're like! I believe what we would call a 'static caravan' is what the Americans would call a trailer. Statics do have a plot of land around them but this often isn't very large. The idea is that they're a base for your holiday, as a touring caravan would be, but unlike a tourer you have a proper albeit small bathroom, bedrooms etc. and you can leave all your belongings in situ.

The locations of caravan parks tend to be beaches or beauty spots and that's what sells them, rather than the 'home' itself. I don't own one (outside my price range!) but I've often stayed in them and they're very comfortable and dry unlike camping.

Actually that hut is much, much bigger than a normal beach hut, looking at the photos. Most of them are just one little room, like literally the size of a shed or garage.

I totally get that. You could get a perfectly nice summer house at that price Tut Tut Grin.

And just because it’s different to the way Danes write numbers, that’s a quarter of a million pounds.

You know those little beach huts...

Here is an article from a few years ago to give you an idea of what it’s like here. This is for a hut (not much bigger than a shed).

Pelleas trouble is when you say caravan, I sort of imagine a trailer park with caravans squished together. My bad, I know Smile.

I would say the most accessible type of 'second home' in the UK is a static caravan - they are reasonably affordable second hand but often associated with horror stories about the rental charges for the land (park) they're on (essentially people find out too late that the park owners have them over a barrel). They also have a limited lifespan because they're not built as permanent fixtures. It's common for people to own one in a holiday park and rent it out for the weeks they don't want it themselves.

On forests vs woods that is one thing that has always confused me. Here’s a very simple explanation:
