On the crest of a ''bloody hell that's good value" wave. Are we mad?

We stayed in a caravan at bodrum, the caravan was fine but the place wasn't that great. Tbf we drove out to different places each day to try out the beaches it was fine.

What’s wrong with Bodrum?

When you say Bodrum, do you mean Bodrum itself? Or somewhere on the peninsula?

Bodrum town is quite nice. The castle is lovely and the mausoleum is somewhat underwhelming, but definitely worth a visit given it's one of the Seven Wonders of the World. You can get a ferry to Kos for the day, which is nice. There's a huge market and a bus (dolmus) station where you can get little buses all over the peninsula.

The peninsula itself is lovely. Lots of the coastal towns haven't been discovered by western tourism. Akyarlar, Ortakent Yahsi, Gumusluk and Yalikavak are all lovely little seaside towns.

Cheap for a reason

The resort is called 'La Blanche Island' Bodrum/Mugla. Had reservations about Turkey but, like I say, got carried away...

.... and what would that reason be @Ellie?

Right, that's trickier then.

The resort is out near a town called Guvercinlik (literally translates as With Pigeons) on the coastal road to Bodrum. You're nowhere near Bodrum proper. Probably a good 30 mins from the town.

The resorts out on that road all look lovely, but are remote. Handy for the airport though.

Depends what you want, I found it a bit Benidormy but you only need to go a bit further down the coast to find fab places.

What’s wrong with Bodrum? We stayed in Yalikivak a few years ago and it was really lovely - great little harbour with boat trips and loads of lovely little restaurants, some with private sunbathing areas. I really liked it. We were in a villa and didn’t venture out to the other bits of the peninsula much, but it all looked nice. Sunshine and Turkish food (out there they just call it food) - what’s not to like? The wine’s not as cheap or as nice as in wine producing countries like Spain but we managed to guzzle a load of it regardless.

Admittedly I’m not a fussy holidayer. I like sun and eating and drinking and have been more than happy in some pretty cheap places, but that holiday was definitely one of my favourites.

Turkey is largely cheap because of FCO guidance. www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/turkey

op we have a holiday booked at that exact same hotel this summer. I've never been to Bodrum before but I think the hotel looks lovely and reviews are great. You've got me worried now though...what's the problem with Bodrum??

Hobbes8 - You should go back to Yalikavak now,the little harbour is now a multi million pound place for the uber rich! Super yachts, high end shops and extortionately priced restaurants! It's really been transformed...

Oh really?! It definitely had pretensions of poshness while we were there - I remember being out one night and people on the next table ordering poncy champagne and stuff. Our villa was pretty swanky too but it was when I had no kids and a disposable income (signs wistfully).

OP - sorry got sidetracked. Have been to Bodrum a fair few times, although the unrest the travel advice is to avoid...hence why prices are cheap, much like Tunisia and Egypt. Family have an apartment close to Bodrum and still happily travel a few times a year with no problems.

Report
ilmmaiss · 25/01/2019 21:06

I've been before and it's a lot of holiday for the price, compared to other places! That being said though, we went without the kids and as PP have said, the reason it's cheap are for reasons like the recent unrest and the fact Turkey borders Syria. I don't know if I'd go with my children, but I couldn't tell you why I feel like that, if that even makes sense!
