JD/Person Spec Query

Lightsareonnobodyshome · 13/04/2021 16:32

I have seen a job I am keen to apply for the JD describes line management of admin staff (including sickness management/appraisals/work allocation/performance etc) but the person spec makes no reference to line management/level of experience expected..? Which seems slightly strange, so just curious as to what level of experience is needed

If it doesn't specify I would assume no line management experience required (but it would probably be a bonus/desirable so if you have line managed before I'd certainly mention it somewhere) - after all everyone has to have a first line management experience somewhere, if every job which entailed management required candidates to have already done it how would anyone get started? I assume they do mention other skills or experiences that would apply to managing people, such as communication, prioritisation etc?

I don't think it's that strange, they probably do assume that if you have the technical skills/experience to do the role and are a generally OK person you'll be just fine as a line manager even if it's your first time (whether that's correct or not is another question but an awful lot of people would think so Grin ).

I never see line management listed in the jobs I'm applying for despite all being team leader roles, if it's a technical role like mine are they are usually just concerned about the technical side and line management can be developed. It's an oversight really, I do find with technical roles public sector organisations I've worked for underestimate the importance of good management which is why we have so many bad ones, it isn't overly valued despite it being such a critical skill. In my experience at least.
