Work and giving notice

I started a job 3-4 weeks ago unfortunately in that time I've been off twice with stress related sickness.
A lot was going on at home , my husband is waiting in medical results , due to COVID I'd gone passed my acceptable age for ivf abroad and my grandfather died and I've struggled with the travelling nearly 3 hours a day.
I'd been casually applying for jobs as I'd taken this one in a panic in summer after husband lost his job and never really expected to get interviewed.
I've been offered a job, which is great but when I applied I used an old template on the web site and it said nothing about my current job.
Like said I've only been there a few weeks and already know it was a mistake .

They when told I got job I said today I'd not have to give notice but need few week to sort out home life , which is true as need to find a carer for my Nan etc
This new job is perfect for me close to home , no major travel costs or parking problems.
I'd already discussed handing in my notice this weekend due to the travelling etc and I was going to say I'd work till the new year.
I've got to apply for a dbs etc and health checks so do have some time but I'm unsure if I should say anything this job.
I've done agency shifts since qualifying but didn't include them as I've only been in the same place a few times .
It was an honest mistake but unsure what to do.
Friend suggested get my formal letter and give 4 weeks notice as I've not been there that long .
It's a shame as I love the job ( the new one is better ) it's a shame life got in the way

It’s a bit unclear to me. I understand that you applied the new job with an old cv which doesn’t have your current job on it. Are you thinking whether to tell your new work that you have a job and you need to give notice?

Giving 4 weeks notice seems ample given the time you've been there - what does your contract say? I would be surprised if it's more than 4 weeks in the first year of employment unless you are very senior...

It is a shame to have to leave after such a short time but given you've applied for and been offered a new job having to resign from your old one is kind of inevitable so I'd just bite the bullet and do it...

Yes , but to be honest by the time my Dbs is done I could have worked a months notice
I'm in 2 minds if to suggest to new job I start first week in january and work over Christmas with this job as planned .

In my opinion if you serve your contract notice you can start with your new job as early as possible. You are not doing anything wrong.

what about references? if the new job offer doesn't know about your present job, who will you ask for a reference?

I wouldn't worry too much, it's been a few weeks, you've hardly been there. It's obviously not working, a weeks notice would be fine. Even if they're not happy there's little they can do.

I’m confused about what you are asking.. if you don’t want to do full notice just tell them, they will probably be happy to let you go early due to your level of absence. If you asking if your new job needs to know about the old one surely they will when they get the p45?

References are my previous employer who I was with for over 8 years and my course tutor .

Is this job covered by Safer Recruitment practises where any gaps in employments should be questioned? If so and they check consider the answer you will supply and that the P45 will have the last employers address and date of leaving?

I had a hob that lasted two weeks in august ( lost it due to COVID) no 1 mentioned that.
It's a big company I'm going to references wanted are a character , my last placement and my tutor all covered , refs nothing to do with pay role

I've had two jobs since April both only last 2 weeks 1 I had a breakdown , I thought I could return to looking after babies after loosing mine but I couldn't and second ended to covid ,
I haven't asked for references from them as they don't know my work or me .
