Where I work, everyone seems to share everything. This is very alien to me. Perhaps its because I spent the first 25 years of my career in a very male dominated industry and now work with mostly women but everyone seems to know the ins and outs of people's relationships etc, not just on a friendship level but the bosses understand the issues people are facing at home and make allowances etc.
E.g. one of my colleague's sons had a nasty accident over the weekend. He's going to be OK but he is in a lot of plaster. The photos have already been round via email. I might mention something like this in passing if we were in the office but I can't imagine contacting work specially to tell them, over a weekend.
I close friend of mine died on Saturday. I'm going to struggle at times today but it doesn't feel right, to me, to ask for allowances. I can't even think of an appropriate way to tell my boss. It's not something I'd email about and I can't make a call specially to tell her, that would be really odd.
Would you share something like this or just get on with things to the best of your ability? Would you even expect anyone to care? I wouldn't have in my last line of work.
