From what I've witnessed I think a lot of this has to do with queer theory, people fall down a rabbit hole where words have no meaning and identity trumps reality. When you've fallen into that trap you lose all grip of whats real, other people aren't flesh and blood humans with feelings etc but a cause to fight against whatever cost.
